Farmers Insurance Open Odds

January 25, 2011

At 3/1, Tiger Woods is rightly the odds on favorite to win the 2011 Farmers Insurance Open. He has, after all, won at Torrey Pines seven times as a professional: six Buick Invitationals and one US Open. That sort of thinking also explains why Phil is in the second place slot, at 14/1. Phil has won three times at Torrey Pines. Dustin Johnson is the third choice at 16/1. Charles Howell, Nick Watney and Rickie Fowler follow at 25/1.

I think that the Farmers is going to tell us a lot about the upcoming season. It’s the first significant field of the year and Tiger’s first of 2011. A good showing by Tiger here would be a sign that he’s ready to reimpose his will on the PGA Tour. By the same token, a poor showing could be an . This is a course that he bas absolutely owned and there can be no excuses.

Phil also has something to prove. Torrey Pines is just as much his as it is Tiger’s. A good showing here could signal he’s over the health issues that plagued him after last year’s Masters’ win. Would be it too much to hope for a Phil-Tiger showdown on Sunday?

On the other hand, there’s also the strong possibility of a win by one of the younger players. I personally like Dustin Johnson for the win. But a win by any of the younger players could continue the changing of the guard storyline from last year.

This is the first tournament of the year that I’m excited about. I’m looking forward to seeing the storylines that develop.
