Donald’s Win Is A Classic

I can’t imagine a more exciting finish to the PGA Tour season than Luke Donald’s come-from-behind victory at the Children’s Miracle Network Classic. After a bogey at eight left him five off the lead, he made a Palmerian Charge on the back nine, reeling off six straight birdies. That was good enough to hold up for a two shot win.

I have to admit, I thought Donald was done on Saturday, and was even more convinced when he made that bogey at eight on Sunday. Donald’s improbable comeback just cements his position as the best player on two Tours. And that’s not hyperbole. Donald is the World Number One by three points, and is in a position to pull off a historic money title double for the PGA and European Tours. To cap it off, the PGA of America has named him Player of the Year. He’s also won the Vardon Trophy for lowest adjusted scoring average. I think its likely he’ll be the PGA Tour Player of the Year. He might also pull off that feat on the European Tour.

The only blemish on his record this year is a rather pedestrian showing in the Majors. But Donald doesn’t think he’s got anything to prove.

“I think I answered a lot of critics’ questions, coming to Disney knowing I had to win and coming up with the goods when I needed to. I feel like I’ve answered all the questions thrown at me.”

I look forward to seeing if he can sustain this excellence into the next season.
