Deutsche Bank - FedEx Cup Thoughts

September 8, 2009

Building up on last weeks’ success, it was another exciting tournament for the FedEx Championship. There at least six players in contention to the last, and for a while it looked like a playoff was in the offing.

Steve Stricker just might be in a position to take Player of the Year honors away from Tiger Woods. The Deutshe Bank was his third victory of the year, to go with two seconds, a third, a fourth and two sixth place finishes. A win at the Tour Championship could seal the deal. He’d have one less win than Tiger, but the Tour Championship would be a bigger victory than anything on Tiger’s resume from this year.

Stricker’s win puts him at the top of the FedEx Cup, and in second behind Tiger in the world standings. He’s second only to Tiger in scoring average this year.

Tiger made a great charge in the morning, shooting a 63, but even he knew that it wasn’t going to be enough. He ultimately finished in eleventh, a very un-Tiger-like five shots out of first. It’s a good thing that he did it before television coverage began, or we would never have seen anything of the other players.

It was interesting that Tiger didn’t go on tv after his round. He played so very well that you’d think he would be happy.

Padraig Harrington’s swing changes seem to have worked themselves out, but for the third time in a month he took himself out of the tournament with just one swing. Actually, it was two swings: hooks on ten and twelve.

I think that we had better enjoy having Tiger play as much as he has. I can’t see him doing it again.

We almost had one of those “Who?” moments, as Jason Duffner nearly pulled it out.

Any thoughts from the gallery?

  • I was slightly taken back by Scott Verplank’s outspoken comments directed at Fred Couples during the tournament which tried to pressure on Couples to select him. If I had been Couples after that trick, Verplank could have walked on water and I wouldn’t have selected him.

Verplank should have respected Couples and the process by not going public and working behind the scenes. Like someone said, everything is political.

  • I missed that one. I normally have a lot of respect for Verplank

  • Has there been any news of a fine for Mr. Woods for his tirade on Friday?

I will definately set the DVR for Thursday, because it will be interesting to see if Monday Tiger is playing or if whatever has been in his head has gotten back in there over the last couple days.  My guess is being paired with Stricker and Slocum, Tiger will be on some sort of charge.

How many weeks in a row is this for Tiger?  You know he gets a little tired at 3 weeks, poor guy.  And he has only had 3 days off too instead of the normal 4!
