Cobra L5 V Driver
Cobra golf’s new L5 V boasts what currently is the largest clubface in golf, a distinction which is supposed to maximize the Coefficient of Restitution across the clubface and offer extreme forgiveness. Coefficient of Restitution is the trampoline effect—the degree to which the face bounces back after impact. That’s part of what makes the sweet spot sweet, and the larger the clubface, the better. Since so few of us hit the ball “on the screws,” a larger clubface gives us more distance and accuracy on off-center hits.
But that’s not a terribly exciting technology, all in all. Every manufacturer is trying to increase the size of their clubfaces for the same reason. Equally old hat is the L5V’s composite crown, which allows Cobra to move weight down and back.
What is interesting and new, however, is the idea of an adjustable hosel. This allows a player to increase the draw-biased setting as needed (though not during a round—that would be illegal). The adjustment is made by removing the shaft, rotating and then replacing it in a new position. (There is, of course, a torque wrench to unseat the shaft and retighten it so the head doesn’t come flying off.).
