Cleveland Classic Driver

Cleveland Classic 290 Driver

Lots of drivers in recent years have claimed to have a “classic look,” but none have gone to the lengths of the Cleveland Classic Driver, which not only has the pear shape, but also molding and color to imitate a persimmon head.

Of course, it’s not a persimmon club, but a modern 460cc titanium beast, with all the weighting, coefficient of restitution and moment of inertia that modern engineering can provide.

I wonder about the target audience of these clubs, though. Persimmon heads have been out of style—if not out of production—for a couple of decades now. And many of those who do remember playing with wood don’t remember it terribly fondly. Compared to today’s metal monsters, they were hard to hit. I honestly haven’t met anyone who was nostalgic in a positive way about persimmon heads.

But then maybe its that I play with the wrong crowd.

  • I like the look, and I never played a wood wood.  This comes a year after Cleveland came out with the Mashie hybrid.

I wonder about the color.  The black face drivers wear over time, although not as badly as the black irons.  I wonder what that streak of bronze is on this club, if it is just paint or can you PVD with differnt colors?

  • Given that driver design innovation has gone largely from performance to paint jobs, I think Cleveland’s strategy is as good as any.  A new driver won’t give a serious performance advantage over any recent model, but it will replace a banged up out-of-style paint job.

Maybe some golf shops could make some additional money by adding a spray booth and touching up your paint while changing the grips?

(not sure if I’m serious or not.)

  • There’s at least one company out there that makes money by refinishing clubheads with the same techniques used to restore cars. You can get flames, sports designs, etc.
