Callaway X-22 Irons
CALLAWAY X-22 Iron Set 3-PW with Graphite Shafts
There was a time when I thought that Callaway irons were clunky and more than a bit unattractive. Not any more. I just love the look of these new X-22 Callaway irons.
Callaway has included a lot of their traditional technologies and features into the irons. There’s the Tru-Bore design, but it’s been modified with a vibration dampener. There’s the Callaway notch that raises Moment of Intertia while maintaining the optimal center of gravity. And the X-22 irons have Callaway’s VFT (Variable Face Thickness) design, for a larger sweet spot. The perimeter weighting is supposed to offer a 10% improvement over previous models.
What makes it different is a slightly thinner topline and sole, which improves the look at address—a point which I think has been a Callaway weakness, except on their tour level clubs.

I can see where you would think that the Big Bertha line is clunky, and perhaps some of the wide-sole ones, but did you think that about the X-xx lines? I think that my X-14s are actually fairly classic looking. The X-16s, I wasn’t crazy about the inlay, but the X-18s look good. I bought the X-20s and love them- but I do like the look of the X-22s even better, but I am not buying another set for quite some time - maybe the X-28s or X-30s.
