Callaway X-24 Hot Iron Set

Callaway X-24 Hot Iron Set

With the X-24, Callaway claims to have created the longest, most accurate X Series iron ever. It features about as much technology as you could possibly squeeze into a set of irons:

• VFT Face Technology - A robust, hot clubface with a large sweet spot generates faster balls speeds for maximum distance, even on off-center hits.
• Precision Notch Weighting - More weight in the perimeter of the clubhead promotes pinpoint accuracy and control and enables an optimal CG position that provides strong trajectories.
• Stealth PVD Finish Stealth PVD Finish - Dark Physical Vapor Deposition Finish comes from a high-tech process that produces a distinctive, non-glare finish.
• Callaway Core Technologies - S2H2, a 360-Degree Undercut Channel and Modified Tru-Bore work together to provide total performance and enhanced feel for a wide range of golfers.

  • After an initial set of bargain Hippo clubs ($200 for bag and all clubs) which I was playing around with, once I started playing regularly, I planned on a nice set of Wilsons or perhaps Tommy Armours, but instead picked up a barely used set of X-14s on the cheap.  Since then I have stuck mostly with Callaway, and the set I am using now is X-20s, X-Hot 3w, X- 5w, 2 X-series hybrids, and a Tour X 60-degree wedge.  With the exception of one driver (a Taylormade Burner), I have only varied from Callaway with a few wedges.

I love the look of the X-24s, and the Orange matches the Orange chevron on the ball I play most often (HX Hot Plus).  But I have been confused by a few decisions that Callaway has made so far with the X-24.  For the first time in at least the last 9 years or more, there is only one standard flex in the graphite shafts.  You can custom build for no extra cost multiple types and flexes of shafts in a set, but off the rack there is no “Senior, Regular, Stiff” choice to be made.

Secondly, Callaway is not currently offering a left handed set.  Odd it seems because their top pro is Phil.

It may be that the X-24 line will be expanded later as the X-22s sell out.  It could be that since the X-22s are getting a little long in the tooth, that Callaway needed to put out a new series and it is just a limited run because of slower sales from the economy.

I hope it doesn’t point to some demise in the X-line.  That series has been extremely successful for the past ten years, in particular the X-14s are still all over the place, and in my group there are a bunch of X-20 players.

  • Count me as another X-20 player. smile

I’ll seriously look at the X-24s, but there are so many good choices out there!  It’s going to take quite a bit of demoing before I decide what iron to go with next time.  OTOH, why mess with a good thing and go with a different series? :D

  • I’m not so sure I like the orange.

  • I like the looks of the X-24’s, I just wish I could afford to play them!

My current set is the Gigagolf GX922’s and I believe it is their copy of the X-22 irons. I like them just fine and I will probably have a hard time spending major coin on a brand name set again (previous set was Cobra FP’s and before that was TaylorMade 200’s). So I’ve spend the money on clubs in the past.

BTW, last year when I was looking at buying a new set of irons, I went to Golfsmith and PGA Tour Superstore several times and tried out pretty much every iron they would let me hit. I liked the X-22’s the most, and the complete set from Gigagolf (4-PW, SW, LW) with the cord grips was $190, including shipping… about $500 less than the real thing.

Although, if I was going to spend lots of money, the X-24’s would be where I would start.

  • If you are really interested in this iron, RockBottomGolf has these for $550 right now.  Not sure how they do it since my local golf shop’s X-24s still carries a tag of $700, but there you go.
