Callaway HX Hot Bite Golf Balls

February 11, 2008

Callaway Golf HX Hot Bite 12 Pack Golf Balls

The Callaway HX Hot has been one of my two favorite balls over the past two seasons. It has amazing distance and accuracy. But if there’s been a criticism of the ball, it’s that it’s hard and doesn’t have a lot of spin.

Callaway seems to be trying to address those issues with the HX Bite. It promises to be softer and to offer more spin. I worry, however, that it’ll lose a bit of that fabulous distance in the equation.

  • Today I went by Golfsmith to pick up a dozen of these, unfortunately they aren’t there yet, and the guys clearly have been asked about this a lot over the past few weeks.

Anyhow, one of my fears is true, the HX Hot is no longer.  Hopefully there is a good supply out there.  Secondly, the Hot Bite is going to be another $5 at $29.95 street instead of $24.95 street.  That doesn’t sit too well with me.  I probably have no business playing with a ball that costs $2 each, but I do play with them, the NXT, the Ignite, the Fire, the HX Hot, and occasionally the HX Pearl.  I have limited myself to that $25 cap though.  I don’t think I will move up to $30 a dozen, so I hope Callaway adjusts and gets a version of the Hot back at $25.

The deal really has been the HX Hot Logo Overruns at Golfsmith at $19/dozen.  Hopefully, those will be available a good long time too.  Maybe there will be Hot Bite Overruns for $23 or so.

  • Oh, and I forgot all about the Bridgestone e5!  If the HX Hot Bite stays at $30, that is what I will be playing with, the e5+ and e6+, both are improvements I think.

  • What do you mean that they’re not “Hot”?

Have they lost distance? If so, I’ll be headed to the Bridgestone exclusively.

  • Sorry- what I meant was that the HX Hot (Orange box) Callaway is going away and is being replaced by the HX Hot Bite.  As far as ball speed or performance, I would hope the Hot Bite is an improvement, and I am sure it is.  I am just going to miss the $25 price point for the ball with the orange chevron.  It is just a psychological thing for me, to be able to get 4 dozen for $100 is different than 4 dozen for $120—a 20% bump in price is a little steep when I know it is not going to take my 250 yard drive to 300 yards (if it does, I WILL be buying the Hot Bite).  But I suspect I won’t see a 20 % improvement and the Bridgestones (and Nike Ignite and NXT Extreme) are close enough to the HX Hot that I won’t miss it too much.

Actually, I also picked up today the Freak, so we will see how that is—and I picked up some 2007 TaylorMade TP Reds for $25/dozen.  I got some of these as my club closed them out a couple months ago and I really like that ball.  But I won’t be paying $40/dozen for the 2008 model.  I will probably try the TaylorMade Burner at $20/dozen after I try the Freaks.  (BY the way, the Freak has a great number scheme, 300, 310, 320, 330—if the ball goes that far for $16/dozen, it will be awesome!)

  • I just picked up the HX Hot Bite… They are amazing and have just come in at Dick’s Sporting Goods. I have an old sleeve of the HX Hot, and was comparing the two around the green.  The results: there is no comparison.  The HX Hot seemed hard as a rock while the HX Bite had amazing control. And the weird thing is, they go equally as far. I was shocked. For $5 more your getting the same great distance of the old HX, and the ability of spin and control around the greens.  Trust me, i was a doubter, but these HX bites are worth it… Especially when the short game is the most critical aspect of your score.

  • I have palyed a couple of rounds with the Hot Bite. I love this ball. I was using the 3-piece red. This ball is Longer (much) and plays very well around the greens.

  • Not to worry about the HX Hot Bite - the extra $5 will soon be forgotten when you experience the performance of these little green babies!
I also have been a big fan of the HX Hot, but I think these are actually a bit LONGER…my normal drives are in the 235-250 yard range, and these were out there in the 245-265 range…
And THESE hold the green and feel buttery soft off the iron faces!!!
I’ve been used to the HX Hots releasing and ending up about 15 yards past where the ball mark was on the green…this past weekend, the ball was usually RIGHT NEXT to the ball mark, (with a deeper ball mark) which tends to indicate a higher spin rate which digs in where it lands….
I’m not going back….THANK YOU, CALLAWAY golf ball engineers!!!  =)

  • I agree with the comments on superb distance and spin/stopping ability. I’m not impressed with shots from sloping fairways - anything steep enough to require striking the ball full rather than just taking a divot has resulted in cutting the cover.

  • Yeah I just picked up a sleeve of these.. I usually played with the NXT Extreme.. but I want more control around the greens. I was very impressed with the HOT BITE! I hit a 5 iron a little low.. and I was convinced was gonna run off the back of the green.. but NO.. it dug in deep and took 2 small bounces forward for a perfect stop in the middle of the green. This is my new standard ball.
