Callaway FT-IZ Driver

June 18, 2010

The Callaway FT-iZ Driver offers more distance and accuracy for golfers.  Most of the clubhead’s weight are targeted in the face and the back power source thanks to polar weighting, producing greater ball speed consistency, clubhead stability and feel. A chemically milled hyperbolic face generates Callaway’s most consistently high ball speeds while an aerodynamic body design helps decrease drag for higher swing speeds. Multiple materials are used in the club through Fusion Technology, which optimizes weight placement.

  • When I called Callaway yesterday about buying a used FT-iq and X-Hybrid, I told the salesdude that I was getting the FT-iz as part of the Golfsmith Phil promo.  He simply said that if I was getting an FT-iz than I was probably wasting the $100 on the FT-iq.  Makes me eager to see my FT-iz (latest info on the tracking site is that it will be sometime in July at the earliest now).

In any case, I should be able to give a good comparison between the FT-i, FT-iq and FT-iz.  I will say this, after using the square FT-i so much over the past 18 months, it is going to seem a little strange to go back to swinging a rounded driver, especially one that is larger than some feet.

I also just gladly sent back my Big Bertha Diablo driver and 3-wood from last year - extremely little use on both.  That driver was long if hit just right, but not as forgiving and felt weird if hit a little off.  Got those free for some Amex points, and the trade in on those is paying for the new (lightly used) 3H X-Hybrid (to match my 2h and 4h).  I could never quite align the Diablos right, the heel and toe were not symmetrical, and the back edge was at a slant - probably a good club if I had figured out the alignment, but confusing.  If you make something with a lot of weird shapes in it, then you also need to have a big centerline so I know the setup to the ball.

  • My local shop did a test on drivers using a robot and it ranked the FT-iz #2 (right behind the Ping G15).

Doesn’t seem like a bad choice if you pick this one.
