Callaway Diablo Forged Irons
CALLAWAY Diablo Edge Forged Iron Set 3-PW with Steel Shafts
Callaway has dropped the Big Bertha nameplate from its lines and is apparently replacing them with a Diablo line of clubs. The Diablo Edge Forged Irons are
Designed for players seeking a traditionally styled club with enhanced playability and performance, these irons feature a soft 1020 carbon steel body, a high-strength Carpenter Steel face. This combination provides outstanding distance with increased accuracy and distance control over typical forged irons with unparalleled levels of feel.
They’re constructed with a soft 1020 carbon steel body and a Carpenter Steel face. The Carpenter Steel is simultaneously lighter and stronger, and thus allows more weight to be repositioned to the perimeter. Thus, you get some of the benefits of a game improvement iron with a topline, narrow sole and shorter blade length that will appeal to the better player.

The Diablo line looks good, I am actually a little surprised Callaway went this way. I had thought that the Diablo driver and woods sort of fell flat last year. I suppose though that the Big Bertha line was getting long in the tooth and they need to replace it with a line more modern. Still it is surprising that it looks like it gave it only one recession year with little marketing to make this transistion.
I will say this, just like I love the looks of my Diablo driver and 3-wood, I really like the Diablo Edge (non-forged) line. It looks great. I will probably look at them seriously when I get the next set (probably in 2011)- but right now, I would anticipate my next set will be an X-24 or X-26 series clubs as my X-14s and X-20s have been so good to me.
BTW- I had thought that Callaway’s X-Hot 3-wood was discontinued, but checking Callaway golf’s website before this comment, it looks like it is in the main lineup. I don’t know if this is a return or not, but if it is, it makes sense. This is the most common 3-wood I now see at the club (mine is getting quite old now). Everyone loves this club.

What is the difference if any between the Callaway Big Bertha Diablo forged irons and the Diable forged irons (no listed as Big Bertha)?
Thanks,

Well, the main difference is what year it is. Performance wise is there a difference between the BB Diablo and the Diablo Edge? Probably not much. IMO, unless you are getting a pretty good deal on the current year clubs, I would try and find the discontinued last years clubs.
The Diablo Edge is just the Big Bertha 2010 by another name. There are differences in appearance, and there is sometime difference in the width of the sole. (check out some of the Big Bertha Wide Soles from previous years).
That really goes to all club purchases in my book- you need to figure out if you can live with the model from last season, you can save 30 to 50% or more by taking a brand new driver or iron set from last year.
Lastly when shopping Callaway, I have always had great success in finding deals on new and lightly used equipment on callawaypreowned.com—and they give top dollar on trades of Callaway equipment.
