I was reminded this past weekend of the usefulness of breathable, waterproof golf clothing. I was playing in a very wet charity golf outing: rain fell intermittently; the cart seats were wet; water and mud splashed into the buggy with every turn of the wheels. The situation clearly called for rain gear and fortunately, I had a rain suit in the trunk of the car. Even more fortunate—the suit was breathable, for in addition to the wet, the air was heavy, hot and humid. In a standard rubberized suit, it would have been unbearable.

The problem with the breathable suits—such as the Gore-Tex one I own—always has been that they’re so darn expensive. New fabrics, however, have brought down the prices. These two from GolfSmith look pretty reasonable.
