The venerable Battle Creek Country Club will host the 36th Michigan Junior Amateur from Monday July 28 through Thursday July 31.
The course is a classic Willie Park Jr. design. As a fan of classic golf, I’d love to play that one.
The golfers will play 36 holes of stroke play, crown a stroke play medalist and then the low 32 scorers will advance to the match play bracket to determine a champion.
The tournament is sponsored by Ann Arbor’s Miles of Golf, the Kendall Academy and Titleist.

Battle Creek Country Club hosting 36th Michigan Junior State Amateur presented by Miles of Golf/Kendall Academy/Titleist
BATTLE CREEK – Battle Creek Country Club, one of the state’s classic golf courses, will host the 36th Michigan Junior State Amateur Championship Monday through Thursday.
The classic Willie Park Jr.-design will test a field of 84 male golfers 18-and-under. The make up the field was determined in large part by sectional qualifiers held earlier this summer.
The golfers will play 36 holes of stroke play, crown a stroke play medalist and then the low 32 scorers will advance to the match play bracket to determine a champion.
Battle Creek Country Club’s rich history dates to 1906 at the Athelstan Club in Battle Creek, but the Willie Park gem on Goguac Lake opened its first nine in 1920 and the second nine in 1922. Park created a traditional parkland style course with a great variety of holes.
The club is led by manager/superintendent Steve Rebhan and PGA professional Doug Kreis.
Six tee positions are available and the course plays to a maximum yardage of 6,966 yards.
Defending champion Donnie Trosper of Canton is in the field, as is recent Michigan Junior Stroke Play Champion James Piot of Canton.
David Szymanski of Grosse Pointe Park was the medalist in the qualifier at Belvedere Golf Club in Charlevoix. Four players tied for medalist honors at the Plum Brook Golf Club qualifier in Sterling Heights – Chace Curtis of Troy, Joey Hildebrand of Bloomfield Hills, Kyle Petrovich of West Bloomfield and Drew Tucci of Macomb.
The list of defending champions in the history of the tournament is impressive
and includes notables like Ryan Brehm, Joey Garber, Andrew Chapman, Danny Janson, Michael Harris and Jeff Roth.
Last year’s GAM Junior Player of the Year Andrew Walker of Battle Creek is a member at the club, but has withdrawn from the competition because of a schedule conflict with a national event, the PGA Junior Championship in Texas.
