Australia Boasts World’s Largest Course

July 21, 2009

Only in Australia ... or maybe in Texas ...

Nullarbor Links, which opens in August 2009, is more than 800 miles long and stretches over two time zones.

How’s that?

As it turns out, each of the holes is located in a different town along a long Australian highway. The holes have been “donated” to the course by established clubs. To play, you have to drive (in a car) between the holes. The average distance between holes is 80 kilometers. A round should take about four days.

The Telegraph has a hole-by-hole description.

From the project press release:

The Nullarbor Links 18-hole par 72 golf course will span 1,365km along the Eyre Highway from Ceduna, SA to Kalgoorlie, WA. Each site in participating towns or roadhouses will include a green and tee and somewhat rugged outback-style natural terrain fairway. The Nullarbor links concept was developed to complement and enhance the tourism industry along the highway, by providing travellers with an additional attraction and reason to slow down and enjoy the beauty of the region.

Established courses will loan a hole each to Nullarbor Links, with Ceduna and Kalgoorlie at either end loaning two holes. Other holes on the par three and four course will be purpose built. Construction began in July 2008 with the surveying of the 11 holes to be constructed along the Highway.

The Nullarbor links project has entered its third phase - Construction and promotion. Bryant Media have been engaged as the Branding and Promotion consultants and they will strategically develop measurable objectives for the marketing and public relations strategy. The construction of the tees and greens is in progress with signage and visitor facilities finalising the project construction phase. During July Council provided and transported crusher fines and crushed stone for the Nullarbor Links holes at Nullarbor, Nundroo and Penong and cleared land for the greens at Nullarbor and Nundroo.

The official opening of the course is to be held in Ceduna on Thursday 22nd October. The opening format will include the official tee off at 3.00pm followed by a formal dinner at 7.00pm. Buses and entourage will leave Ceduna Friday morning and complete the course in Kalgoorlie on Monday 26th October. More information is available at the newly relaunched http://www.nullarborlinks.com.

Benefits:
This golf course represents significant tourism and economic development opportunities for the region. The course is expected to become an international tourist icon and has already received much national and international media coverage and interest from tour operators.
