Appearance Fees On Tour?

March 4, 2005

Phil Mushnick of The New York Post has some harsh words for the PGA Tour. While the Tour has always had a ban on appearance fees, Ford has gotten around it by throwing a pro-am event on Monday with a $150,000 payment to the players. That, he says, is why the Ford-Doral has ten of the top 11 players—including Tiger Woods, who plays for rival car company Buick.

Have we seen the end of the appearance fee ban?

It’s interesting to think about in light of Woods’ call for fewer events.

Mushnick’s column is here.

  • The players had all committed to playing in the tournament before the Monday gig was set up, though.
