Annika’s Frustrations At The US Open

June 25, 2006

As we head in to the US Women’s Open this week, here’s one fact you probably didn’t realize. As good as she is, Annika Sorenstam’s last victory in a US Women’s Open was 1996.

Since then, she’s won the British Women’s Open, three LPGA Championships, and three Kraft Nabisco Championships.

But no US Opens.

Given that, it’s hard to say who the favorite is going into this week’s Open at Newport Country Club in Rhode Island (where, incidentally, the first US Open and Amateur were held). LPGA Hall of Famers Karrie Webb and Se Ri Pak have won the first two ladies’ majors this year. Lorena Ochoa may be the hottest golfer on the planet right now—man or woman. And in the background lurks Michelle Wie, looking for her first win as a professional. In both of her majors this year, Wie was just a birdie putt away from forcing a playoff.

And there’s a whole lot of other talent packed right in there. In fact, that’s one of the things I like best about the LPGA this year. With Annika sliding backwards a little, there’s a whole lot of talent packed in very tightly.
