America’s Summer Golf Capital
With more than 850 courses and spectacular summer weather, Michigan has long billed itself as America’s Summer Golf Capital.
There’s an article at the Observer and Eccentric that covers some of the economic impact of golf on Michigan—a state known chiefly for its auto products.
Michigan’s golfing industry stands near the top in many categories, including a $3.1 billion annual impact on the state’s economy. Avid golfers and travelers to the state, which total some 500,000, have the luxury to choose among 900 public courses from Ludington to Livonia and Traverse City to Troy.
The reputation of Michigan as America’s Summer Golf Capital and Golf Digest’s selection as the 12th best golf destination in the world is well earned.
The top players in the world make an annual visit to the state to compete in such tournaments as The Buick Open in Grand Blanc and Ford Senior Open in Dearborn. And Oakland Hills in Birmingham has hosted such historic events as The US Open, PGA Championship and Ryder Cup.
The state is so golf-mad that Governor Jennifer Granholm recently declared June “Play Golf Michigan” month.
