A Look At Winged Foot
This year’s US Open Championship will be played at Winged Foot, the legendary course in Mamaroneck, New York.
Built in 1923, the course has hosted more than its share of national events, including the U.S. Open (1929, 1959, 1974, 1984, 2006), U.S. Women’s Open (1957, 1972 - East Course), U.S. Senior Open (1980 - East Course), U.S. Amateur (1940, 2004), Walker Cup (1949), PGA Championship (1997).
Your average golfer will never be able to play Winged Foot, but every time you take a Mulligan, you’re paying homage to this course:
It seems in 1937, an Irishman named David Mulligan joined the club. He was noted as a slow starter and when his opening tee shot would scurry any which way, he would reload a second. His friends called this shot a “Mulligan.”

The Open is a great tournament to watch especially with how they torture the pros with the ridiculous speed of the greens. Come Sunday it’s like putting on my concrete driveway. The 2008 Open is at Torrey Pines, which is just 90 minutes from where I live. I think I’ll definitely go to a few days.
