A Changing of The Guard?

May 18, 2010

For the first time in eighteen years, Vijay Singh is out of golf’s Top 50.

Because I appreciated his work ethic, and his willingness to play in tournaments both large and small—and as many of either of those as possible—Vijay has long been a favorite of mine.

Other than Woody, Vijay is the only player to have been number one during the last ten years. He reached that lofty pinnacle in 2004.

Given our earlier conversation about age being a factor in golf—John Feinstein suggests in Moment of Glory: The Year Underdogs Ruled Golf that 35 may be a bit of a brick wall, Vijay is a clear exception. He has had 18 wins over the age of 40 on the regular Tour.
