2010 Titleist NXT Tour

TITLEIST NXT Tour

TITLEIST NXT Tour

The Titleist NXT Tour is a new three layer ball that fits somewhere between the now-venerable Pro V1 and the somewhat less respected two layer NXT.

Aside from the usual large, fast core, and responsive mantle that every three piece boasts, the main difference seems to be in the cover. The NXT Tour has a low-count, high coverage dimple pattern that’s supposed to help golfers with distance. And although I have never thought Titleist balls had a durability problem, the thin cover is said to be designed to be more durable than previous, similar designs.

I wonder about the price point, however. For a three piece Titleist, it’s not a bad price, either. Golfsmith has them for just under $30 a dozen.

  • I found one of these (the older model) on the course one day and really enjoyed playing it the nine or so holes I had it.  It seemed to be durable enough as I recall and I liked its performance, so at the time I decided that once I ran out of the discount TaylorMade TP Blacks I had ($55 for 2 doz) I would almost certainly use the NXT Tour as my regular ball.  As luck would have it, the TM TPs stayed on sale for quite awhile (even now, they’re $30/doz at my local shop) so I am stocked up for at least the next little while.

Point being, I was very impressed with the NXT Tour and for $30/doz would definitely have it on my very short list for my regular golf ball.  With a ball like this and my skill level, I’m not sure I can justify a tour level ball for $40+/doz.

  • Just played eighteen in Walnut Creek at Boundary Oak. I bought the 2 dozen costco deal of titleist SF, but it got comendeered for a Fathersday gift ( Have to wait a few weeks).
I’m strugling to break 100 and figured a consistant ball would be better than losing $10 dollar 15 packs from Big five.

Frustrated that I did not have my Titlesists, I bought a sleeve of 2010 NXT tours at the pro shop before my first hole. I warmed up with my cheap balls. At the 13th hole, they started us on the tenth for twilight, I started using the NXT Tours. I was having a dificult time getting my driver up to speed with my cheep hard distance balls, But the NXT Tour flew confidently even though I was still hitting it short.

I have ordered a medicine ball for core training. I’m 50 years old and starting my third year of golf.

My Irons were long and straight with the NXT tour. The hit is not soft, But it is not hard either. It just feels good.

The wedges seemed shorter, but the feel was great. Once the speed was dialed in, the ball was consitant on the greens. I chipped one in from below the green. It seems the ball rolls truer on the greens than the harder balls, May be that random sized dimple patterrn makes the ball roll straighter. Either that or its the soft feel. Titlest has something goin on, that Callaway does not have on the green. Feels great off the putter. Made a few long puts. Had many 2 puts. The 3 puts were my fault but were fewer than with the harder balls.

The 330 dimple patern does not shape shots as well as other balls, but again that might be my lower swing speed today and it was relatively cool, about 65 degrees F.

I really felt confident when using this ball. The expensive price also helped me be more conservative on the course which lowered my scores on individual holes. I still managed to screw up enough holes that I did not break 100.

I did get several pars, and had good chance for a par on the 420 yd 4th hole.  On the third stroke I was 135 out with a 9 iron. I skulled it and the ball rolled off the green on the right. The flag was on the rear left side toward the back. I putted fifty feet out of the short ruff and just missed the hole and it rolled 4ft past into the short ruff on the other side.
I ended up with a double bogey on the 420 yd par four this day. Then NXT Tour was very long off my ft2-hybrid and I really should have accomplished my first par on that hole from the long blue tees.

I really liked the nxt tour and will probably buy another sleeve when these wear out. I’ll use them when I’m away from hazards and see a birdy opportunity. They really do work well when I’m hitting well unlike the rocks I’ve been using to learn with.

I’ll probably use the 24 packs of the Titlest tour distace sfs till I get a decent set of irons.
My chinese muscle back blades that are one inch to long are starting to were on me.
I think a set of Ft graphite irons would be easier to carry both on my back and to the green. Callaways don’t come cheap though.

I golf for the excercise, not to mention my addictive personality.

Great golf. Great Balls. I suggest trying both. See if they work for you!

  • I played the (now discontinued) Taylormade T.P. Red’s for most of last year. I experimented with the T.P. blacks (“o.k.”) and the Penta (pricey and too much spin for my game). I happened across an NXT Tour near the tail end of last season and played it for the remaining few holes. I was impressed by the ball and promised myself to keep an eye out for a good deal on them. Well, Titleist doesn’t have “sales”, so I got a dozen mint condition used ones for the beginning of this season. So far, I’m quite impressed. This ball seems to fit my game (15 handicap) quite well. It offers the perfect blend of distance, forgiveness and spin. Feel off the putter is a bit numb, but other than that it’s perfect. I’ve always been an “anti-Titleist” guy, but this ball has me sold on the hype.
