Here’s a swing analysis of 2007 Masters Champion Zach Johnson. His extension through the swing is just amazing.

Zach Johnson is, understandably, quite the hero in Iowa. For a perspective from that state, read The DesMoines Register’s article on what’s next for the Masters winner.

In a funny (perhaps bittersweet) bit on Bloomberg.Com, Scott Soshnick wonders what’s gotten into Zach Johnson, who is not acting like Major winner. He still drives his own RV, doesn’t own a yacht and a trophy wife, and—heaven forbid—is actually playing the week following his victory.

Soshnick suggests that he take a page from Tiger’s playbook and take a few weeks off. But that’s not for Johnson.

The mere fact that Johnson showed up at the Heritage is enough to make any prima donna athlete boil. He should have had the good sense to withdraw and spend more time on his post-Masters media tour, which included visits with David Letterman, CNN, ESPN and Regis & Kelly. But he didn’t. Keeping his word was more important.

Meet Zach Johnson of Iowa, where handshakes are contracts and where a man’s word is more valuable than his limousine, private jet or diamond-encrusted wristwatch.

``For a number of reasons, I felt like I should be there,’’ Johnson said. ``First and foremost, I committed, so I’m going to uphold that.’’

Shame on Sports Illustrated. Zach Johnson wins the Masters and he’s upstaged by an also-ran. Look at the teeny weeny insert that he gets against the tableau of Tiger.

It just goes to show how thoroughly Tiger dominates the game of golf.

A small look at where Tiger’s head is:

“I had a chance and looking back over the week I basically blew the tournament with two rounds when I had bogey-bogey finishes”

Tiger expects to win. And if he doesn’t, it’s not because someone else played better. It’s because he gave it away.

Note To Tiger: Zach Johnson also had his struggles, like the three putt from three feet on Friday. If he makes that birdie, he beats you by four.

The bottom line is that, for this week, Zach Johnson played better golf over four rounds than the mighty Tiger Woods.

Some thoughts on the 2007 Masters, in no particular order:

Zach Johnson is a great story. Congratulations.

This Masters had the highest winning score since the 1950s. It wasn’t a lot of fun to watch, even with the multiple lead changes on Sunday. The problem was that the lead changes weren’t from players making charges, but from other players making mistakes.

There are a lot of disappointed players after this tournament. Going into the final round, there probably were ten to twelve with a real chance to win. And each of them can rightly say that they gave it away.

Tiger, Goosen, Rose and Appleby may be most disappointed. Each had a legitimate chance with three or four holes to go.

This Masters wasn’t about winners. It was about survivors.

Tiger is still having problems with that swing.

Zach Johnson is this year’s Ben Curtis. He’s a good player, but I don’t see this as his “coming out party.”

Tiger does not seem to be comfortable coming from behind.  There were times when I was sure he was going to cry from frustration.

Tiger was really telegraphing his moods with his body language. When he grabbed the lead, he was springing down the fairway. On the final holes, his shoulders were slumped and he was slinking along.

The local paper had a quote from a guy who lives in Tecumseh, Michigan and who is at The Masters:

My golfing weather is 40 degrees. I’ve golfed in snow six inches deep. I don’t know what the temperature was, but probably below freezing.

Mike Misiak, a Tecumseh resident who is at the masters. He wore a t shirt, turtleneck, sweater and jacket. He wore black pants “to soak up the sun” and tundra-worthy black gloves.
