Augusta National and the Masters Tournament are Bobby Jones' second enduring legacy to golf. The course and club were founded in 1931, after Jones retired from competitive golf. The tournament originally was called the Augusta National Invitation Tournament, because Jones didn't like the sound of "The Masters." However, the name changed in 1939. Horton Smith won the first Masters, but it was Gene Sarazen in the second who put the tournament on the map with his double eagle on the 15th -- the "shot heard round the world." Watch this section for articles and updates on The Masters, including scores, leaderboards, and results.

It turns out that Ernie Els is a blogger, too. And this week, he writes about why he never really got started at The Masters.

Luck?

Napoleon once said its better to be lucky than to be good.

In Tiger’s case, his luck is amplified by his skill—or is it the other way around.

Sally Jenkins writes about the effects of luck in this past weekend’s Masters in The Washington Post. She argues that many kinds of luck—intriguingly, even MORAL luck—played a part in the Woods - DiMarco showdown.

Ryan Moore Completes Special Year

We didn’t see enough of Ryan Moore on Sunday. You’d think that instead of interminably playing that annoying Masters tune and constantly telling us about the “tradition like no other” they could have shown some more golf action.

If you’re wondering how his round shaped up, here’s an article that gives a pretty good account.

Avoiding Writing About The Masters

I’ve been avoiding writing about the Masters all day long ... Not sure I want to add to the cacophany.

But there are a few good articles on second place finisher Chris DiMarco: In the Sun Times, New York Newsday and Sports Illustrated.

The theme is the same, and one that I agree with: DiMarco showed incredible toughness and that he’s ready to win majors.

What An Exciting Masters!

This has to be one of the most exciting golf tournaments of all time. Chris DiMarco showed incredible toughness. Most golfers would have folded with the Tiger in the hunt.

What Happens if X Wins The Masters?

This morning, it looks as though either Chris DiMarco will be in a position to win his first green jacket. At this moment, he is just two behind Tiger who in a charge as gone to -13. What would that do for DiMarco’s World Golf Ranking? The Golf Observer’s Ranking Blog has a table that shows it would catapult him to number 6.

Of course, if either Vijay or Tiger wins, they become number one. Phil Mickelson would fall short, assuming a strong showing by either Vijay or Tiger.

Singh Seems Set On Role As Golf’s Major Villian

You’ve got to wonder what Vijay Singh is up to.

On Friday at the Masters’, Singh complained to officials that someone in the group ahead of his was damaging the greens with potentially illegal spikes. That prompted tournament officials to check Phil Mickelson’s spikes.

He knew that Mickelson was in that group and I don’t think it’s too much of a stretch for people to think that Vijay was trying to get under Phil’s skin.

Phil apparently thought so, as several news organizations have reported that he confronted Vijay in the locker room afterwards. Mickelson said that he was “distracted” by the officials questioning his spikes.

Exactly what Vijay Singh wanted?

Vijay’s latest antics follow an incident after the Bay Hill where Tom Pernice asked PGA Tour officials to inspect Tiger Woods’ driver to determine if it was regulation.

Pernice is Vijay’s best friend on the tour. Many suspect that Singh put Pernice up to it.

Is Vijay so desperate to stay on top that he’s playing mind games with his competition?

Or is it coincidence?

Vijay is certainly not the most popular guy on tour. And he’s not popular with the media, either. His comments a couple of years ago about Annika Sorenstam didn’t help.

But I don’t think its fair to ascribe every little incident to a sinister Fijian plot. It’s entirely possible that he really did think that the greens were dinked up by someone’s cleats.

I’m willing to give him the benefit of the doubt.
