Golf is the gadget lover's sport. There are more golf gizmos than anyone can count: tees, and markers, stroke counters, range finders, ball retrievers, GPS systems, hat clips, sports seats, divot tools, groove cleaners, weight tape. You can't even begin to count them all.

Dremel Club Cleaning Kit

Club Cleaning Kit

My Dremel is the most useful tool I own. I used it a couple of days ago to cut a pipe when I replaced a faucet.  I also use it on a regular basis for clubmaking—to abrade shaft ends, to sand out the insides of hosels, to polish ferrules and heads, and more.

Now Dremel has a Club Cleaning Kit that features a battery operated Dremel with a brass brush to clean metal clubs and a bristle brush to clean graphite and wooden clubs, and golf shoe soft spikes. It also comes with a clip-on carry bag, so you can take it with you on the course.

I don’t actually own the model listed here, but I do have a battery operated model (in addition to my heavy duty variable speed corded one), and have used the brass and bristle brushes for just the purposes this kit is intended for. It all works well.

Suunto G9 GPS Watch

Suunto G9

In the “what will they think of next” column, I offer the Suunto G9 watch as a prime exhibit.

Suunto G9 will help you measure your strokes with 12 channel GPS technology so that you know how far you really strike with each club. It also stores statistics of each game: number of putts, number of bunker hits, whether you had a fairway hit and whether you reached the green in regulation. Learn more about your game, see how your game develops and what you should do to improve your game. You can store your favorite courses or check from suuntosports.com whether someone else has stored them and download them to your Suunto G9. Having the course key points stored, Suunto G9 will give you distances and directions to tee, green, pin and other obstacles such as water or bunkers on each fairway. It will even recommend club selection after a couple of rounds of play.

Its amazing.

Twenty years ago, when I was in college, a friend of mine marveled at my 4.77 mhz, 64K of ram computer and said “Its a cool world and getting cooler all the time.”

I look at this watch and think how far we’ve come from then.

Its a cool world and getting cooler all the time.

Epoch Tees

Epoch-3 Tees 15 Pack

There’s been a raging debate on several golf discussion boards that I visit over whether or not the Epoch Golf Tees really work. The manufacturer says that they have:

integrated biotechnology material science and aerodynamic surface geometry to bring a biodegradable, premium performance golf tee to market that significantly outperforms the wood tee.

The theory apparently is that the shape of the tee promotes distance and accuracy. The tees also supposedly are more biodegradable than wood.

You can get the Epoch-3 Tees 15 Pack here.

XM Radio To Carry A Golf Channel

Ok. Finally a reason to subscribe to XM Radio. Reuters is reporting that XM Radio has inked a deal with the PGA Tour to carry tournaments:

XM said it has partnered with programming company PureGolf to help create enough news and talk to fill a channel 24 hours a day with content aimed at the enthusiast.

XM also will stream live coverage of PGA Tour events, which are attended by 10 million Americans annually. XM also will sell and even rent its XM2go portable radio at the events.

“It’s a convenience for fans who want to cover the action all around the course,” Butler said.

Butler also said other PGA-XM marketing initiatives are in the works, though he offered no details.

“XM Radio makes it possible for fans to follow the tournaments and get the latest golf news virtually anywhere from coast to coast, whether they are on the road, at the office, or even in the gallery at a tour event,” PGA Tour commissioner Tim Finchem said.

Nightflyer Night Golf Store

A new store called Nightflyer Golf offers glowing balls, and other night golf course supplies.

What I’m looking for is someone who supplies snow wedges and orange balls. Here in February in the frozen north, I can’t play in the day, let alone in the dark.

Zivot Divot Tool Review

Zivot Steel Divot Tool

The Zivot is a switchblade for the country club set. I bought one of these the other day at a local golf shop and I really like it. The tool fits well in my hand, and has a nice heft. It also has a magnet ballmarker attached.

When you press the small button on this tool, the ball mark repair tool pops out, just like a switchblade. Cool. But the best part about this is that the pointy end is stored in the handle until you need it. That way, you don’t get poked by a repair tool in your pocket. (I once stabbed myself in the leg with a regular tool. Ok, I realize that everyone out there isn’t such a klutz, but I am).
