Tiger Hysteria

I’m not a big fan of Tiger Woods (he never seems like he’s having any fun out there), but a bit in the Sport Telegraph titled ” Could Woods become just another middle-aged bogeyman?” is just ridiculous. The guy fails to win a Masters and the next thing you knw, he’s a has-been:

Johnny Miller believes that Woods’s putting stroke might be prone to break down in middle-age, just as putting problems eventually got to nearly all the great players with the exception of Nicklaus. The forthcoming majors will further test Miller’s argument. It is a theory that is gaining credence after bad putting cost Tiger the 2005 US Open and the 2006 Masters. In all his previous career I can only recall the putter being a problem at Birkdale in 1998.

Pinemeadow Tour 780 Ti Driver

image

Ok. so you want to jump on the latest PGA Tour trend, and carry two drivers like Phil Mickelson. But you can’t drop a thousand dollars for two namebrand clubs.

You COULD, however, spend $200 and get a pair of Pinemeadow Tour 780 Ti drivers.

The Tour 780 Ti has a 460cc titanium head and a movable weight system that lets you set up the driver the way you want it. Included with the club are two six gram tungsten weights and two two-gram aluminum ones. Placing the heavier weights on the heel will encourage a draw, while palcing them on the toe will cause the club to tend toward a fade. Putting the heavier weights toward the front will produce a lower ball flight, while moving them back produces a higher one.

So with this syystem, you could set one up for a low, distance gobbling draw, while the other is set for a high, accurate fade.

The best of both worlds.

Just like Phil.

Economic Slump In Michigan Affects Golf Courses

The Detroit News has an article on how the economic slump in Michigan is affecting the area’s golf courses. Michigan has more public golf courses than any state in the country, and the inhabitants are golf-mad. But as the domestic auto industry continues to slide, people just aren’t playing as much as they used to.

And there’s another angle that I’d never thought of. Many courses survived on profits from corporate outings and the like—things that are going by the wayside as corporations cut their budgets.

I know of one course that I liked to play that has closed ... its making way for a housing development. And I expect to see many more, as the sale of the land will reap an owner far more profit than a marginal course ever could.
