TaylorMade RocketBallz Driver

imageI’m not entirely sure about the name of this new TaylorMade line. RocketBallz to me sounds a bit like one of those Japanese television cartoons my boys watch. I have visions of characters with odd eyes, spiky technicolor hair and jumpsuits affecting bizarre poses and shouting things like: “Behold the Power of ... ROCKETBALLZ!”

Name aside, this driver has the usual TaylorMade cornucopia of technology. It’s got “Flight Control Technology,” which allows players to adjust the loft and face angle.  A lightweight shaft and grip promotes faster swing speed for more distance and the speed-enhancing head aerodynamics promotes faster head speed for more distance. And the venerable Inverted Cone Clubface Technology promotes more speed and distance on off-center hits. Visually, you’ve got the white crown and black face, which TaylorMade says makes alignment easy and eliminates glare on top.

I think they ought to do the driver in spiky flames of orange, yellow and blue.

  • Not excited about the driver, but I am looking forward to trying out the fairway woods.  I am playing the Burner Superfast 2010 (the black Superfast), and I can’t imagine that I will get much more distance, if any, from the Rocketballz.  In fact, last year, I did get a Superfast 2.0 (the white) and it was dead compared to the previous model.  I am more than content to play this through the year, with my Titleist 910D2 being the backup.

However, I am very much intrigued by the fairway woods, with the velocity/compression/bounce slot.  My 3W distance is weak!  Part of it is getting loft.  I am awaiting the Rocketballz 3HL (17-degree) to come in so I can try that.  I think that is technically a 4W, in fact, Dustin Johnson’s tour model 4W is 17-degree.  I assume that Taylormade is just making the shaft the same length as the 3W to call it the 3-High Launch.

I did get the Rocketballz golfballz too.  I am going to need some spinning, not just distance though.
