5 out of 5 stars Makes sense to buy from Amazon: Trainer is a good deal for the money   November 8, 2008

Buy from Amazon: after researching and testing we decided on this model and tried to buy one from our local Sports Authority. We went on a Saturday, the listed price was $599 for the 420 model (which seems to have a less sophisticated program head), but they didn't have any in stock; 5 were due in Monday early a.m., they told us to come back Monday evening. We went back Monday, the shipment had not arrived but the price had gone up to $699. The Sports Authority website listed the price of the 420 as $599 with a $122 shipping charge. Amazon listed the 430 for $599 with free shipping. We ordered in from Amazon on Tuesday, 2 days later the shipping company called saying we could have it delivered any day we wanted the following week.
That is, from Amazon: lower price, no charge shipping, speedy delivery.
If you are considering purchasing this from a store, the box is big and heavy, more than can fit in the back of a station wagon I think, and too heavy for a roof rack.
The shipping company Amazon used brought the box right up to my front door. I opened the box and carried pieces inside to where we were setting it up. The heaviest single piece is maybe 40 lbs. The assembly instructions were good; all the tools needed are included although I did decide to use my own screwdriver,
The machine is sturdy. The program options are just what we wanted. These Schwinn ellipticals are rated highly. We looked at some makes that were less expensive but they looked or felt like they were not going to last.
We are very happy with the equipment and the Amazon purchase experience.

2 out of 5 stars WAS soooo excited to use it :(   November 7, 2008
Well Of course you hear about this machine starting to squeak terribly after a couple months. I got on mine for the first time and the squeaking started!! My fiance is trying to fix it right now. And this squeaking is SOOOO loud!! I hate it! I bought a NordicTrack at Costco but returned it because it was too big and heavy. Now I find out this thing sounds like something DYING! Maybe I should just return them all and buy the ones on Craigs list for $300.

5 out of 5 stars Two Thumbs Up!   November 5, 2008

This is a best buy for the following reasons:

1) Price is remarkable. Some people gave it four stars because it's not the best out there, but you have to take everything into consideration for the price. Obviously, the best elliptical (in my opinion) is the Precor which I always used at the gym, but then again, that's a $4000 machine. We're talking $600 for this one, and you definitely get the bang for your buck. Plus, it comes with varying levels of resistance, heart monitor, water bottle holder, and free shipping...can't beat that!

2) Quality is apparent. This is no lightweight piece of machinery, although it is easy to move around. The frame is heavy and you feel well-supported (it holds up to 250 lbs.) One good thing I really like is that when you try to stop after going very fast, it stops. I've been on some ellipticals where the momentum of the wheel feels like it's going to throw you off when you try to slow down suddenly. Also, I have always trusted Nautilus to be one of the top manufacturers of gym equipment, and I don't know if Nautilus owns Schwinn, but the box was sent by Nautilus. Warranty is also covered by Nautilus and this, to me, is a big plus.

3) Whisper quiet. This machine is extremely smooth and quiet. You can definitely use this at 4am without waking anyone up. The smooth, gliding motion is also easy on the knees. I have knee problems and my wife has back problems, but we both have no problems when it comes to exercising on this machine. Did I mention that it's quiet?

4) Assembly is simple. Despite what others said, the assembly is very easy - it just takes some time. The instructions are clear, and all the necessary pieces are included. From opening the box to using the machine, it took about 2.5 hours - that's a conservative estimate. You just need to be careful because there are no extra pieces. They give exactly the amount of bolts and washers you need, so don't lose anything.

The only advice I would give is don't tighten anything until you have all the screws at least hand-screwed in. That will save you time if you have a problem hole (mentioned in other reviews as "holes not aligning", but not really the case.) If you do come across this, just focus on getting the bolt in the problem hole first, and the rest should be easy.

Sorry for the lengthy review, but I hope it helps.

4 out of 5 stars Easy to assemble and quiet   November 3, 2008

After reading tons of reviews for ellipticals under $1000 and trying out several at area stores, my husband and I chose to purchase the 430 through Amazon. With free shipping, it was worth the $589 price, plus we didn't have to heave the tremendously large and heavy box any farther than from our front porch to inside the house. My husband would never claim to be handy, yet he put the elliptical together in under 3 hours, only asking for me to hold things in place several times. He says the instructions were very helpful, even if he did miss one step and had to put on the proper large washers later to secure the handlebars. It's very quiet and smooth, no squeaks as others have reported. My husband prefers to workout hard at upper levels while I prefer to move faster at the easier levels. I only gave it 4 stars because we've only had it a short time and will use it much more this winter when the weather drives us indoors. We're pleased with our purchase of the 430 so far!

4 out of 5 stars Good Trainer at a GREAT Price !   October 31, 2008
A very good home trainer (18 inch stride) for the best price. You can "test drive" it at Sears, there price is the same but then you will most likely have a state TAX to pay and also loading it into your car. Shipment left it next to house, take it piece by piece and 2 hr late up a running. Good and stable, well built. For the price you can't go wrong.
