Cronometro March 25, 2008 3 out of 14 found this review helpful
Great display, tactile-feedback buttons, easy to use. Non-standard battery, poor design on back cover. Minimal instructions. March 4, 2008 4 out of 8 found this review helpful
Overall, this is a very good product. It is easy to use and looks to be well made and reliable. I got it in yellow so it would stand out. I like the color. I bought it to time tasks on the computer, such how long it takes Windows to reboot (a calendar might be more appropriate), so I won't be timing any track meets. But now that I have it, I just might time the kids in the pool or on their bikes.
As others have said, the buttons have a positive, tactile feedback, like a good keyboard. You will know for sure whether you pushed them. No accidental resets or failure to get the time. The display is large enough for almost anyone to read without glasses. It's not backlit, so you need enough ambient light, but this should normally be the case.
I do have a few complaints. It uses a non-standard battery. By that I mean, not one that I normally stock (AAA or AA). The instructions claim that the battery will last 5 years. I don't know if a AA or AAA would be less durable. If I needed to depend on this for a meet, I would have a second battery on hand.
The design of the back cover is not so good. It's held on by 6 small Phillips screws. This seems like a lot, but maybe that's to provide moisture resistance. Opening the cover is tricky and seems too likely to damage the button mechanism. They mounted part of the button mechanism on the inside top of the back cover. The three buttons have plastic tabs that extend down about 3/4 of an inch into this mechanism. It would be very easy to pull too hard on the top of the back cover and bend or break these tabs. When I started to remove it, it seemed stuck at the top, so I lifted the bottom first and it slid out. This is not mentioned in the instructions. A much better design would be to have the back cover only open over the bottom half where the battery is.
The back cover must also be removed to remove or insert the lanyard. I would prefer a loop through which the lanyard could be threaded. I bet the moisture resistance is reduced, not to mention the threads in the case where the screws go, every time the back cover is removed.
It does not have any sleep / power save function, so the LEDs are visible all the time. I don't know if this shortens battery life much.
The instructions are minimal -- just a piece of cardboard that doubles as the product label.
On the side panel, it says "Save Storage Case" and it shows a picture of a little case partway open. My watch did not come with a case and there is no way to reuse the plastic packaging bubble as a case.
I would suggest that they add a couple of solar cells. I have a cheap calculator from Office Depot that has four small (1" by .25") solar cells. I believe there is also a battery, but the case does not even open to replace it. I have had it 10-12 years and it is still working.
This stopwatch is not perfect, but it's pretty good.
Fantastic Stopwatch January 12, 2008 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
One thing only mentioned briefly in the description - this watch does NOT make a beeping noise when you hit the buttons. It makes a sort of dull click. For those of us looking to use a stopwatch in a quiet environment and an unobtrusive way (I'm a stage manager) this is FANTASTIC. *Edit - after 8 months of use the clock on the stopwatch is unreliable. I have had to reset it about once every two months - it very slowly gets fast.
Nice product December 8, 2007 4 out of 6 found this review helpful
The Pro Survivor is somewhat better than the survivor because it offers extra shock resistance; more water resistance; no fail switches and an extra large display. The XL display was important for me. The watch is simple. It measures minutes, seconds and 1/100 seconds up to 40 minutes, then it only measures hours, minutes and seconds. The time and date features were not important to me. It has a five year warranty without proof of purchase.
