5 out of 5 stars Greatest game in the history of the universe   August 13, 2007

As long as you aren't a big dummy, you'll love this game. I love this game with all my heart, and body . . . which says a lot. One time I thought about Risk too much, I pooped my pants. If anyone tells you this game isn't the best game in the universe, you'd better head butt them immediately because they're the biggest idiot in the world. Trust me, I would know.

4 out of 5 stars rule the world without even hurting a soul!   July 8, 2007

...and that's exactly what RISK does! I was introduced to this beautiful game when I was only 12, and I've been hooked ever since, though finding an eager player in my small, busy family is hard. You may think this game is a tad expensive, but that's because of the beautifully crafted game pieces you'll find- hundreds of little soldiers standing at the ready, along with cavalrymen wielding swords and artillery. Modeled after the world around the 19th century and using Revolutionary-era units, the world is yours! RISK is a relatively simple game compared to other more complicated war games; you simply place your men, attack, defend, and you can fortify strongholds. Along the way you gain territory cards, which can be cashed in for bonus reinforcements. This is a great game and will be a keystone in your board game collection for years to come. Never again will a rainy day be boring. The lowdown:

PROS
-finely crafted game pieces in six different colors
-game has a plastic tray with compartments for everything
-thick cardboard game mat; very durable
-different ways to play the game (in this game there is also a variant called Secret Mission RISK)

CONS
-a game may takes hours to finish
-the game pieces are very tiny, so they may be easily knocked over or get lost
-the game takes a long time to set up (15-20 minutes!)
-misshaped continents (ukraine [a european territory] is half the size of asia)
-younger players may not understand so well
-the game relies heavily on dice rolls for the outcome of your battles

5 out of 5 stars Risk is not only a game ...   May 12, 2007

I have been playing Risk board game for a long time now and it is perhaps my all time favourite game. I was so fascinated by the game, and learned so much, that I ended up writing a book about it (Total Diplomacy: The Art of Winning RISK). It's that good.

Risk has been a very successful strategy game. The success of this game largely depends on its flexibility. Since you have to deal with other players over a well-defined goal, you are pushed to negotiate with them continuously. You need to understand their position, where they are, where they are heading to, whether they are friends or foes, if they listen to you or want you to listen to them, and so on and so forth. These issues all directly relate to real-life situations as well. In fact, this is why a new player feels right at home when playing for the first time. As soon as you know the basic rules of the game, you can start using your entire life knowledge to compete with other players over the resources provided in the game, and compete to win. In short, Risk is a great game to use to fine-tune your tactical, strategical and diplomatical skills.

In this day and age, we always experience a lack of time. Everyone wants to use their time as effectively as possible. As many know, the best way to achieve this is by multitasking: doing many tasks at once. However, this is easier said than done. Playing Risk is entertaining, and simultaneously it teaches a number of lessons. For example, you will learn how to deal with people effectively, how to control your resources, how to fight for what you want and manage risk.

My book, attempts to address two domains: it shows you how to win at Risk and it illustrates the finer concepts and skills required to deal with people. The idea is to use Risk as a training tool for skills otherwise challenging to master in real life.

By being familiar with the concept behind the game, you can focus on the actual skills in a more systematic way. Once you have mastered the dynamics of a particular situation, such as dealing with conflict escalation or understanding prisoners' dilemma, you can move away from the abstract environment of the game and apply your findings to the real world.

Risk, like any other game, has a set of well-defined rules and a specified goal. All you have to do is to conquer the world and win the game. If you cannot achieve this consistently, you obviously are not as good as other players, and you can keep practicing until you become better. This is in fact a simple, albeit harsh, measure of performance, but one that can easily be understood. In short, if you lose, keep working on your skills until you win. Practice makes perfect. You cannot blame someone else. If you lose consistently, you cannot blame it on luck either.

Risk can be used as a tool to learn more about yourself and about dealing with others. Buy the game, play it and join the risk community which its members are already engaged with different variations of Risk board game or the online versions of Risk. These days, it's easier than ever before to find playmates who either know the game already or are willing to play with you. You can find a lot of resources on Risk on the web site of Total Diplomacy.

Now, lets see if I can go and play some more Risk. I feel like conquering the world...

5 out of 5 stars Make Ready! Aim! FIRE!!!!!   February 13, 2007

Ah yes, this game is a lot of fun! I recently picked up this game (item as described here) to play with my two teenage sons (12 and 14). It wasn't long before all my old memories of playing this game as a child/teenager game back. Including all those strategies I used to play by. Needless, my children have had some practice playing Risk on the Computer and Sega Genisis...but not on the game board itself!

We've played a few games to get back into the swing of it. And now our quest to rule the world can take several days (to complete a game)! There are some variations to the rules that must be taken into account. For one, I'll remark about turning in Risk Cards. There is a game piece that needs to be moved along after a player turns in a set of Risk cards, for reinforcements. Eventually in a long drawn out game, this game piece can get moved up to 60 Reinforcements!! But that's it, on the board it stops at 60. I find counting back down to 4 and then back up again works nicely. This is only one example, and to anyone reading this who hasn't played Risk will not know what I'm talking about. Those who have played Risk before will have an idea what I'm saying. Basically, there are a few variations to the rules that must be adhere to. Seek out some information on the game online and you'll learn more!

In addition, this new Risk game has a brillant style to it! The board colors and layout, the new Risk pieces (Infintry, Cannon and Calvery) are nice touches! It's a fun game to have laid out before you.

Basically, a game like Risk brings kids back to the table in a more hands on approach to "gaming". They wont mind turning off their Computer or Playstions to spend time with Risk, after all, if they win, they rule the world! Sit back, stand up, whichever you perfer and enjoy!
