Brew and go March 14, 2003 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
The concept is great. This product makes good coffee and automatically turns off, which makes it safer. The main problem is that the supplied coffee filter needs a top to prevent the expanded, water soaked, coffee grinds from flowing over the filter basket into the brewed coffee itself. I solved this problem by spooning the coffee into a "fold over" paper filter. This works and saves a big mess. Now the coffee is grind-free and the pot is easy to clean.
What a Mess February 26, 2003 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
It sure sounds like a good idea! But.... the lid doesn't fit the cup very well, and the coffee drips and sputters everywhere while brewing. I would not buy again
Brew'n Mess would be more like it........... February 24, 2003 2 out of 5 found this review helpful
I followed the directions carefully not to mention I've been making coffee for 40 years. This design is very poor. Directions say put sugar and cream in travel mug before brewing. Okay what they don't tell you is forget about stirring because the cup and contents are so hot it's impossible to get the lid off w/o burning yourself and spilling coffee all over. The first time I made coffee it worked like it should, the second time the coffee ran all over my counter top. Have no idea why, I took the same steps. I do not recommend this item at all and I'm sorry I wasted my money on it.
Convenient, yes. Messy, yes. Here's a fix. February 23, 2003 8 out of 8 found this review helpful
I've had one of these things for about 15 months. For my needs, it's perfect. Fast, easy, convenient. The mug doesn't taste like rubber...but it doesn't fit my cupholder in the car either; I bought another mug to use there. The coffee's just fine. The MESS, however, is real. It's a design fault--the inner cap fits nicely over the top of the filter, but during the brewing process that inner cap eventually becomes coated with nasty, oily, up-splashes of used coffee grounds. It can't be wiped off easily (and if you try, crud falls into the water tank); you can unplug it and hold it upside down under a hot faucet and eventually get it reasonably clean...at the risk of getting water into the heating element--not a good idea. I finally figured out a solution: I use a paper filter--not under the coffee, but OVER it. Just drape it over the edges of the basket and tuck it under the edge before placing in the brewer. (It's easier if you wet it first, so it can stick to the sides). End of problem. It's a nuisance, but ALL coffeemakers are a nuisance in some way; this one's just eccentric.
Disappointing. February 21, 2003 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I was really excited about this coffeemaker. I work in an office with no real kitchen facilities, plus I am the only decaf drinker, so this was perfect. Unfortunately, I have been quite disappointed. Contrary to what other reviewers have written, yes I do have half a brain and yes I do know how to brew coffee. I used the proper amount of water and coffee (even less than the recommended amount) and it still got coffee grounds *everywhere*. It sort of defeats the purpose of being "convenient" when you have to take the whole unit to the bathroom and rinse out the water reservoir to get the coffee grounds out. It brews a great cup of coffee, and I like the travel mug a lot, but if you're looking for a single-cup coffeemaker, I'd recommend passing on this one and continuing on your quest. Bummer....
