5 out of 5 stars Awesome TOMTOM   September 7, 2008
This product was a great price, I did tons of research and found for the price this was top choice. I used it alot over a weeklong trip to another state and it was awesome. Helped find resteraunts, stores and we never ever got lost. I highly recomend this easy to use nav. You will not be disapointed.

Good, reliable basic GPS at a bargain price. Very happy with purchase. Now my wife can argue with the GPS about which way to turn instead of me!

2 out of 5 stars TomTom is sad sad   September 3, 2008

This is our 2nd TomTom and now I'm trying to decide whether to return this one.
We ordered our first TomTom because we used our daughter's TomTom in July when we went on vacation. It was great. So I ordered a TomTom making sure I ordered the one with text to message that announced street names. We got it and used it and yep no street names. I keep looking at the description at Amazon and what I ordered was to give us street names, well they sent me the wrong one. So I called Amazon, they were very nice and said they would send me out the correct 130S Tom Tom and they did. I returned the first TomTom (cost me $5.35) but I figured it was worth it.
We got our new TomTom, the correct 130s and the voice is horrible. We can barely hear it even after having it up full blast, but at times it does sound loud only to go back being barely audible. Right now we can hear it but is it going to go back to barely audible? I don't know and I hate to return another one. But yet I want a Tomtom that I can hear the directions.
If it wasn't for this sound problem, I would have given TomTom 4 stars because it is a good system, my daughter has no problem with her TomTom, it was purchased at Walmart.
Hopefully this week I will know what direction to take on this TomTom.

5 out of 5 stars Don't worry about the volume!   September 1, 2008

I had read the reviews of the Tom Tom and some complained about low volume. Having lost some hearing through the years I was a little concerned, but it's fine! I've even had to turn the volume down and really like this little thing. It's fairly basic, but it's all I needed, very reasonable, easy to see and understand. If I was to do it again, I'd probably step up one notch and get the one that speaks the street names, but this one is still fine. It can be updated regularly, Tom Tom has a great support site, and downloadable voices are fun. I have The Don, a mob guy. "You want a ride? I'll give ya a ride. Get in my limo!" I'm really happy with it.

The unit is easy to use but not full featured - it is an entry level model. The speaker evidently has been redesigned as compared to earlier models. The volume is more than sufficient and the tonal quality is what you would expect from a small speaker. On the down side, all GPS data bases have errors in them but this database seems to have many more errors on local streets that it shows as through streets but are not. I have an older Garmin unit with Garmin Mapsource data base and overall (in my opinion), Mapsource has fewer errors. I used the unit on vacation for a week in New Hampshire and it was more than adequate - data base errors not withstanding. The software version update is available free on-line and one free map database update is available within the first 30 days of ownership. The update did not address any of the errors I found in my local area of Southern New Jersey. The price was right for what you get ($146 on Amazon.com). I did not want or need the more expensive models. If the 'pricier' units use the same database, then I assume they would show the same errors.
