5 out of 5 stars Why did it take me so long to buy this?!   March 8, 2007

I now have a drawer full of remotes, some of them old univesal remotes that aren't worth their weight in lead! Programing was actually a breeze, and I was up and running in no time. Anyone who complains about setting up the remote obviously does not have the patience to do it. It took me 15 mins to half an hour and I have not looked back. It's extremely, intuitive to use. The real test will be when my mother comes to visit ;-)

Despite its good looks it's not perfect. My only gripe is that sometimes there is a fractional delay between when I press a button and the command being executed. While annoying, I have found that it is something I can live with. I also question the usb cover. I think frequent use will prevent it from closing, but only time will tell.

4 out of 5 stars Very good indeed   March 8, 2007
Best value for the money, really; the only "con" is that it does not handle very well my TV's input states; e.g. when the TV is started, if SCART does not detect any transmission on it (pin 8), it goes to Antenna/Cable; if it does, it switches directly to SCART input, if no signal is detected on Antenna/Cable; but the remote cannot handle this indeterminism; so I have to make sure I stop all signals when I switch devices... otherwise no problems so far with it; I recently purchased the 670 remote, due to arrive in a few days; I am curious about the performance of 670 rechargeable vs 550 regular batteries

4 out of 5 stars great looking, easy set up, but buttons could use a little help   March 8, 2007

I purchased this remote as well as an 880. I actually like the 550 twice as much, and it costs half as much...go figure. The button layout on the 880 is not good. You have to look at the remote to know what you are pressing as your fingers can not find the buttons on their own (no diffrentiation). The programing and set up are very easy, though I did need to customize (add) a few obvious buttons that were missing from the stock menu.

One issue with this remote is that it functions based on the state it "thinks" you equipment is in. So, if you use a sleep timer (in the bedroom), or physically turn off your tv or stereo (without the remote), you will first have to hit the all off button on the remote before you can start a new activity. (make sure you do this while covering the front beam to avoid some equipment turning back on) The guide button (which I use often) is also not a very reliable button...the rubber can bend and not engage the switch, requiring multiple pushes to get it to work.

If you use a DVR cable box, you will want to program the remote to always leave it on, or you are not goign to like having to deal with the help button every time you watch TV. If you do not do this, the remote will turn off your cable box when you power down, but the cable box turns itself back on whenever it needs to record a show. If the box is on, and you press the activity to "Watch TV," it may end up turning the box back off (as it is sending an on/off signal) which can be annoying.

You can not program macros on this remote which seems like a missed opportunity. Also, no ipod or apple remote programing options are available yet. =(

Most of the mentioned can be delt with in programming, but hopefully the above will save you some time in doing so. I probably made about a dozen minor programing changes to the remote to get it to function the way I think it should. Now that I have, I'm quite happy with it. Just wish the guide button functioned better. I have 2 of these remotes now (one for home theater, and one for bedroom theater) and they both function the same. They are good looking though!

(I have owned the following universals: Pronto, Sony,....this is the best so far)

5 out of 5 stars Great remote   March 8, 2007

I bought this remote about a month ago and it has worked great. It took a little while to enter the information into the computer but the set up was painless.

I have everything set up so that when I click one button, 3 devices turn on at the same time. What I like about the remote is that if one device doesn't turn on for some reason, you click help and it will run through and make sure all of the devices turn on.

So far, so good. I am happy with this remote.

Took a while to finally get it programed correctly. Once I finally got it programed properly, it works great. Not as easy to program as they make it seem
