TomTom One 130 July 22, 2008 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
The TomTom 130 is a great gps unit, with being able to download other peoples points of interest to add to your own for free, ease of use, reliability, and on top of it all it's only $150 with no subscription or service fees for navigation use.
Pros- There are so many great features about the TomTom but the greatest features that I like in this unit is definitely the points of interest downloads you can find on TomTom Home for free, be warned that some may be off a little or not even there at all since they are points that people plotted and uploaded on their own and not actually the work of the TomTom company. The TomTom also recalculates a new route and displays it automatically if you missed an exit or a turn.
Cons-There are only a few minor flaws that kept me from giving it a 5 star rating first being that the sound level is weak, you can hear it just fine as long as the windows are up and the radio is off otherwise forget it, but even then I am more a visual person and the on screen route guide is great. The other being that it takes just a second or two longer than I would care to show me the next turn on the display or to recalculate a new route if you missed a turn for when you are driving through a city and need results fast, even then it's not all that slow.
I drove from Killeen, Tx all the way to Washington, DC just using my TomTom, finding places I wanted to eat and stay along the way not once looking at a map or getting stuck in traffic jams. Overall it really is one of the most useful toys you can buy and for only $150 I would gladly pay $250 for this thing if I had to.
Great Product July 22, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I bought this product for my husband for his birthday. At first, I was a little skeptical, since he LOVES Garmin products. But I spent a lot of time reading reviews about Garmin, Magellan, and TomTom, and I really felt I would get a better deal for the price I paid out of the TomTom.
My husband loves this product. He was able to download and update his map for free, which he couldn't have done for free with a Garmin of the same price. He likes that it is so small and fits in his pocket. He likes how easy it is to use.
The only complaint so far, is that the battery doesn't last as long as he would like. I had read that complaint from other reviews too. He is a delivery driver, so a longer battery would have helped him out. However, he doesn't have it on all the time. And it is so easy to recharge.
I'm really happy with my choice and so is he.
Biggest problem -- Volume July 21, 2008 My biggest problem with this Tom-Tom One 130 model is the volume. I am not hearing impaired, have set volume to 100% and still have trouble hearing the voice. The only comment I get from their Customer Service area is to constantly upgrade software daily and hope something shows up to help. This tells me that their software is really fluid and changes a lot.
My very first use of this device told me to turn left in the middle of I-5. You can't turn left on a California freeway! I assume that was a glitch.
Subsequent use of this device has been OK if I shut all windows, no talking, no radio, and constantly pay attention -- then I get instructions. I will keep trying.
Anyone buying a portable navigation device needs to ask about sufficient volume! There is no point having voice instructions if you can't hear them. If my device (130 model)had a speaker jack, I would have attached to a speaker where I can control volume.
Some units have sound issues July 20, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
The main reason for posting this review is to let you know that some units have problems with their sound volume. My 130 is very loud and clear. Yesterday I went with a friend to get her 130 and the sound was barely audible. We immediately returned it and the replacement was as loud and clear as mine. So after checking your volume settings, if your unit isn't loud and clear, exchange it. Mini Review: I love my 130. Pros: It is accurate, fast, easy to see, easy to use and small enough to carry around if so desired. I also like the fold out suction cup. No need to install some giant wobbly stick. Cons: After a couple of weeks, the satellite detection on start up takes a long time. To fix this you connect the 130 to your PC and let the software download a file with updated satellite info (and repeat this when it slows down again). No big deal, but necessary. Also, I don't like how at busy areas (for example when multiple freeway on- and off-ramps are close together) the lanes merge into one fat yellow line (in the 3D view), making it hard to see which lane to follow. At that point you better just look at the exit number the unit displays and do your own thinking ;-)
UPDATE: Ironically, the day after I posted this review, the online update from TomTom Home trashed my 130. When I turned it on, it behaved as if it was brand new and asked me the initial questions again (are you left handed etc). The problem was that every time it got to the point of selecting the voice, it would re-boot and start with the first question again. There is a Backup/Restore option in TomTom home, which I will use before I connect it for updates again. Since I actually bought the extended warranty (shut up ;-) I returned it to the store and they simply replaced it with a brand new unit (which was just as loud and clear as my original unit). If it was a problem with the online update, I would hope TomTom fixes it and subsequent updates should fix the unit.
TomTom 130: Buyer Beware! July 20, 2008 3 out of 5 found this review helpful
TomTom only warrants their product for 14 days, so be absolutely sure that you want this product. My unit (TomTom 130)only powers up half of the time, cannot locate a satellite 25% of the time, and sent me in the wrong direction 25% of the time. In addition, the unit will not speak directions in the number of miles to the next turn--only in yards.
I contacted Customer Service, and their scripted comments was the polite way of stating "Screw You". I have only had the product for a little over a month and personally believe that this $200 product should be useful for something besides a paperweight.
If you still decide to buy a TomTom rather than a Magellan or one of the other GPS manufacturers, go with the TomTom130S (at least then, the voice should tell you the street name to turn down rather than 400 yards!)
