Memory for memories. August 17, 2008

for the price was simply the best deal. Works well with my camcorder (9Mbs) to record video directly to flash memory. Only recommendation is if you wanted to put it directly to your computer to download upload you might need a new card reader, not all of them work with the 32 GB cards.

I bought this for use with my Nokia N800 internet tablet. Mine came formatted as one FAT32 partition with a formatted capacity of 30.37GB. I loaded 28.5GB of music on mine using a USB 2.0 card reader and it took ~9+ hours to copy everything. Class 4 refers to the guaranteed WRITE speed which I wasn't completely concerned about since I was primarily intending to play my music from it and that is a READ function. This card has worked great for me and I would purchase another.

Details: card is made in Japan, it is class 4 (which translates into 4 megabytes per second transfer rate), works well with Canon VIXIA HF100. For now, it is the most spacious card I could find, and it is reasonably priced per megabyte. Although, I am sure, I will be laughing at myself spending that kind of money on this capacity couple years down the row... Price to pay for progress of technology - complimentary obsolescence. I hope it is fast enough to keep up with the future models of camcorders and higher recording bandwith. Right now Canon VIXIA HF100 and its cousin HF10 max out at 17 MB/s, and that is before AVCHD compression kicks in. Next generation of camcorders will top out at 24 MB/s, - HF11 is already announced in Japan. So hoping that Class 4 will be good enough for next wave, although I might skip generation or two till manufacturers make more significant improvements that would affect my workflow. Now I need to update my computer (MacBook) to speed up conversions of AVCHD files... Demanding peripherals will drive computer hardware sales and vice versa. Never ending cycle! So time to start gathering my pennies and venture over to Apple Store.

Boy, am I glad I ordered mine early...this PNY 32Gb SDHC card is tough to find now and if you can find one, the wait can be weeks or months! I ordered mine right here on Amazon.com and it arrived in just two days (I'm an Amazon.com "Prime" member). I removed my camera's 16Gb card and installed this new 32GB card without a hitch. The card formatted quickly and I was capturing images within seconds of taking it out of the package. I admit being concerned about the Class 4 label when all my other cards are Class 6 which allegedly yields a faster read/write speed...alas my fears were put to rest. This card performed like a champ, at least in my own trials. The most obvious challenge for any memory card is the lag time between shots and this digital photography phenomenon can be frustrating. Lag time is not a big deal if you're shooting with a "point & shoot" for family snapshots, but when you're outdoors and need to capture the contsantly evolving world around us...lag time will make you scream.
So, I set my Pentax k100d digital SLR in the continuous shooting mode and snapped off 10 consecutive images at 3.7fps wihout any problems. I removed the card, inserted the card into my PC card reader slot and uploaded the images to my hard drive. All in all, a very pleasant experience. Admittedly, I'll never shoot 30,000+ images @ my camera's highest resolution setting but it's nice to have the space.
If you can get one of these cards, I highly recommend it...just be sure your electronic item can handle this type of card as some older gadgets, cameras, etc...can't handle this card!

I've been using this card a few days and so far is working great. Seems to be just as fast as my Patriot 16GB Class 6 card when transferring files on my laptop. Not really sure I needed this much space but it sure is comforting to know it's there. Okay now it's been 2 weeks and it is still working great. Put movies and pictures on it from a SDHC cardreader with diferent computers, including a ASUS EEE, and it did not have any hiccups yet. It's so convenient to have 32GB in such a small device. I never knew I was going to find so many ways to use it.
