5 out of 5 stars Works great with Streets and Trips   August 23, 2007
1 out of 1 found this review helpful

I fired this baby up indoors and it found my location instantly!

I tried it with MS Streets and Trips 2007 on a Dell Inspiron 1300 PC running Windows XP. It works very well, with fast updates of my speed. You can even see my 'arrow' turning when I do u-turns.

My testing was done with the unit placed on the dash.

Unit is magnetic and waterproof if you need to place it on your automobile exterior, but I don't see why you would. Suction cup also for placement on window interior.

Still working on the hibernation problem. May be able to change the way USB devices are put to sleep in my computer's bios settings.

2 out of 5 stars It's just OK, Meh.   August 9, 2007

I second another reviewers comments that this does not allow sleep or hibernate on windows machines...well...sort of. They will go asleep, but will require a full reboot with hard off to get it started again. So, they will sleep, but not wake up. Most agree that this is problem unless you are running an inverter and always on computer. In that scenario it works fine. This is a driver issue and the driver has not been updated at all. every setting in the device manager will not ameliorate this problem.

This unit would be a great option for a CarPuter that is always on. That's where mine will go when my next project advances to the next stage.

5 out of 5 stars BEST "wired" GPS receiver you can buy   May 12, 2007

It used the SirfIII chipset and it is the best you can get. Quick fix, good performance. I used it with MS Streets & Trips and also with the European version MS Autoroute. It works like a charm !!!

4 out of 5 stars A resounding YES!!! But who wrote the instructions???   December 29, 2006

GPSlim 236 Bluetooth Navigation GPS Receiver
This is an absolute must see & experience... It is smaller than the smallest Cell Phone yet what it does speaks volumes... From Bluetooth capability, to a "decent" battery life (so far), it is as flexible, as signal sensitive and as versatile as any other unit out there, Whether it be a highly priced one or a bargain.

It utilizes SiRFstarIII technology which makes it very sensitive and affords it the ability to provide great position location performance. Given its 20 separate channels, it has the capability to track that same number of satellites, and it does acquire/ re-acquire numerous signals efficiently and simultaneously.

Keep in mind that this is only a signal receiver. You will need to install it with a Laptop/notebook, a PDA, a Smartphone, a Palmpilot, or a similar device and you will need to also install a software program for street mapping/routing capabilities.

As I mentioned above, it does have Bluetooth capability where it can be used without any cables however, you have an optional cable (not your typical USB to Mini USB cable, BTW... The PINOUTs are different) which you can purchase if you choose to opt to go with one. Additionally, and despite it's sensitive sensor/satellite-locator, you do have the option of purchasing an external/additional antenna if need be. Included at no extra charge, you'll find a Li-ion rechargeable battery which is rated to power the unit for an average of 9 hours; a cigarette lighter (DC) charger and an in wall (AC) charger.

What surprised me the most is that it DOES NOT require a clear line of sight to the sky for it to pick up the signal (like some of the older non-SiRFstarIII models. In fact, as I was initially setting it up and while it flashed continuously indicating that a signal had been found and locked, I doubted what I had just read about the flashing LED's. Had to read them again. Not until I had it up and running, did I believe that it was actually tracking as many as 7 satellites while I was indoors.

This, of course could mean that one need not place it in a spot where it can be seen by someone unscrupulous, but that you can possibly tuck it (I have mine velcro'ed inside of the glove compartment) away from the hot sun (as is recommended by the manufacturer) which can cause a lot of damage to either the unit itself or to the Li-ion battery that is inside of it.

Of course, nothing is 100% perfect. This unit (and frankly this manufacturer's entire line-up) comes with a joke for a set of instructions. A perfect example as to why I say this is the fact that in one set of instructions (the Quick Guide") they opted to utilize a full page to describing how to remove, install and charge the battery, versus a single page to instruct on how to set up Bluetooth; how to Scan for a satellite signal; how to incorporate its signal into a software mapping program; and lastly, how to care for the unit. As for the full set of instruction booklet, it must have been translated from Chinese as it is quite lacking grammatically. You'll have to read each line twice before you can understand what to do or how. "If that know I I buy this unit! not may be,"

Good news is once you have it set up and running (for those of us who refer to the instructions anyway) you might not need them ever again.

2 out of 5 stars Windows Laptop does not hibernate with this connected   December 24, 2006
6 out of 7 found this review helpful

Yes, it is quick to pick up signal but has one major problem and I guess it is with drivers that it comes with. I am using windows XP and it does not come out of hibernation if you hibernated the windows with this gps receiver connected. I contacted Holux support also and after number of emails back and forth, they said that i have to ship the unit to them. But I guess that this is a universal problem with this unit. So if you want to hibernated and want to successfully resume from hibernation, then disconnect this unit from the laptop first and then hibernated it. If somebody comes across any solution, please post here.
