DOA - No DVD/ No Blu for You November 14, 2008 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
I bought this as a second Blu-ray player for the bedroom so we could watch our movies in bed. We hooked it up and never got a round to watching a movie for about a week.
I was planning to do the update to enable BD-Live, but never got around to it.
My wife was going to watch a movie (The Queen) and she told me it wasn't playing and the display said No Disc. I told her to try a DVD, but the same thing happened. I got home and experienced the same thing with 3 different Blu-ray movies.
I almost tried doing the firmware update, but I was so mad I just told my self that it shouldn't need to be done to enable the player to do what it was sold to do, play movies. This was quite upsetting. I'm just refunding and waiting on a better player.
Buyer Beware November 13, 2008 8 out of 8 found this review helpful
I was thrilled to find a great deal for a new blue ray player but ended up extremely disappointed with my purchase.
I owned this product for about 4 hours before it stopped working. The firmware update rendered the machine incredibly slow and it refused to play discs faster than one frame per second.
I returned it and got another thinking maybe I had a lemon. So I updated the firmware and the same thing happened.
I contacted Samsung about the issue, and they rudely told me that it was my fault it didn't work because I updated the firmware. At that point it was clear that Samsung customer service reps had no intention of doing anything but blame me for their shabby product's faults. So after my dismal experience with Samsung, I returned the player for a full refund. Now I'm buying a Sony.
3 months and broken November 13, 2008 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
I bought this in August and now three months later it is being repaired. It stops playing in the middle of audio CDs. It will not play some standard DVDs. Also, the unit runs very, very, VERY hot! Burnt my arm as lifted it out of the cabinet.
blue ray sucks November 13, 2008 2 out of 5 found this review helpful
recieved it from Amazon on Oct. 26 and have had trouble with it. I updated the firmware and worked better for a couple of movies then I rented Hellboy. and it would not play. I called Samsung and they told me that the Hellboy blue-ray had problems and that Samsung was working on a firmware fix. I am sick of paying big prices for technology that isn't ready for the public. I will be sending this player back and not go back to blue-ray again. It is to much trouble and time consuming. This blue-ray thing is as bad as Windows Vista. It is just too much trouble. I like to relax and enjoy a movie cuss and wonder what the hell is wrong with it.
Worked for 2 weeks, then stopped recognizing discs November 10, 2008 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
Our experience was that Amazon's delivery was wonderful, it was easy to set up, it seemed like a good choice for both regular DVDs and Blu-Ray, until a couple of days ago when it stopped recognizing discs other than Blu-Ray . . . it wouldn't even accept the disc we created to try to update the firmware (downloaded from Samsung website) to see if that would help. Since we didn't buy it to only be able to view Blu-Ray, we're returning it.
I tried to contact Samsung first and there is no phone technical support, very little information on troubleshooting in the manual or online, and emailing technical support hasn't yielded any reply. I came here and saw others having the same problems, so we are opting to return it.
In response the review I just read about it running quietly -- I would agree, but it also runs rather hot. It makes me wonder if the quietness is because the fans aren't adequate.
I really can't recommend this to anyone. It seems as if too many of us have had it work for a short a time and quit, or had it never recognize non-Blu-Ray discs. It shouldn't claim to do both if it fails as frequently as it appears to.
