Wonderful product! November 14, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Review written by Philip's wife and purchaser of the GPS unit.
For the first time in several years, my husband & I took a roadtrip with no "squabbling" about directions. We even made a side trip in the midst of the original destination! The unit is compact, but large enough for two senior citizens to see without fumbling for reading glasses. Also very easy to operate and understand for we non-technical people. We have all ready recommended it to several friends. Worth every penny!! And Amazon had the best price-even beat the "big box" stores for this model!
Garmin Nuvi 255W November 13, 2008 I researched all the GPS navigators, and decided this was the one for me. I like the way it operates, but this is my second Garmin(upgrade) so I probably am a little biased. The 255W does everything I need and it's easy to get it to do what I want it to do. A plus for me is choice of language for voice directions, I use it to help me with my French. My only criticism is the data base. There is a four lane highway between Birmingham and Jasper Alabama, that has been open for two years and it isn't there. I can see missing some small roads in new neighborhoods, but this is a major thoroughfare. Overall, great little unit.
Excellent Device November 13, 2008 Just got the Garmin 255W yesterday. It is easy to set up and worked immediately without any difficulty. One thing that was not clear in the product description is the fact that it comes with an in-vehicle power cable (plugs into the cigarette lighter). This was not mentioned in the description, so I ordered one thinking that I needed it. I did not, so will be retunring to Amazon for a refund.
The voice descriptions of the routes are clear and easily understood, even for me with a hearing loss. So far, it has been great at identifying nearby businesses in the search function, a great asset since I am always looking for the nearest ATM when I run out of cash. I tried a Garmin out by renting one when I was out of town and renting a car. Was very impressed with the ease of finding my way around a city that I had never been in before. This is the first GPS unit that I have owned and I am impressed.
Love my Garmin Nuvi 255w November 12, 2008 Being as this was my first GPS I was really amazed at how it was intuitive right out of the box. Super user friendly. Don't know how I got along all these years without this valuable item . . .
Garmin nuevi 255W 4.3" GPS Navigator review November 12, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
The TTFF (Time To First Fix) is rather long roughly 2.5 minutes upon switching on the device for the first time when the car is stationary before it managed to pinpoint the current coordinate. Considering the price and being a 2008 model, I expected that the location determination to be pretty quick. In addition, the USB cable is not included in the package. I discovered that I need it while trying to register the device and/or to get updated maps at the Garmin website.
Rerouting calculation is up to my expectation, i.e. it only takes a couple of seconds before providing you with a new route. There should be some features built-in the device such as speed limit monitor. This greatly helps the driver to keep his eye on the road instead of looking at the speedometer from time to time. Some countries impose lower speed limit in residential areas. Having this feature enable the device to alert and notify the driver to ease off on the accelerator.
The estimated time to arrival does not seem to calculate the travelling time accurately. More often than not, the estimated arrival time is updated 1-2 minutes before the last expected arrival time.
Text-to-speech feature is great to have which is the reason I bought the device in the first place. Unfortunately, the device could not pronounce symbols in the street name like slash ("/") or dash ("-"). This is rather annoying since some street names were further divided into sub-locations (like lanes) differentiated by symbols. It makes all street names being pronounced similarly within an area.
Overall, I'm quite satisfied with the product.
