I got this because the blu-ray players are still too expensive. This player works very good, the only thing I don't like is that it does not show the chapter # on the display on the dvd player itself , but if you press the DISPLAY button you can see it on the screen. If you hook up yours through HDMI you also get sound through it on the tv, so no need to run any other wire other than hdmi(mine is hooked up through a receiver). You get a nice blue led light as well.
I got a Phillips model 1 day before this one then replaced it with this sony one because it did not have a fiber optic out for the sound and when I tried to hook up the red/white rca to the receiver , my speakers and especially the sub made a very loud humming noise (the picture wasn't as good either). With the fiber optic , it IS perfect !!!!!!!

Works great with my 32" LCD July 7, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I watch a lot of DVD's and always found it a little annoying that the entire screen of my high definition TV is not leveraged with a standard DVD player. This unit upscales standard DVD's so that the picture fills up the entire screen and with no loss in picture quality that I can see. I love it! With blu-ray players costing 5 times as much, this is a great bargain until blu-ray DVD's and players become the norm and their prices drop.
Your TV may already upscale July 6, 2008 5 out of 6 found this review helpful
I bought this player to replace an older progressive scan DVD (Sony DVP-NS41P) attached to a fairly new Sony HD LCD (46V2500) hoping the NS700 would improve DVD playback. It didn't. The TV upscales every input to the highest that input will allow (ie: HMDI scales to 1080p, component to 1080i, etc). I was hoping the player would scale better than the TV, but that wasn't the case. For some reason we ended up with two copies of Spiderman 2, so I played one on the progessive scan DVD & one on the upscaling DVD (at the same time)and flipped between them to compare. The picture looked pretty much the same (maybe a little worse, if anything). Even after fiddling with the TV inputs, it only ever looked the same. If you already have a good upscaling TV, just stick with that.
excellent DVD player July 6, 2008 2 out of 4 found this review helpful
This HDMI capable DVD player has excellent format selection and the upscaling (to 1080p)of commercial DVD's looks quite good on my new 1080p Sony HDTV---Plus the pricing of this device is excellent! It is not true HD quality but I would not hesitate to recommend this player to anyone who wants 1080p upscaling capability but is not in a hurry to plunk down big bucks for a Blu-Ray player that will give true HD performance.
The few minor "cons" are not really worth listing as it does its job, i.e. playing video/DVD content quite well.
Great Picture June 27, 2008 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
This player has handled every DVD I've thrown at it. Produces an excellent picture. No problems. Does an amazing job of upscaling. Couldn't be happier.
