Yes - I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE my new Kindle! I have been waiting for years for an electronic reading device that made it easy to carry all my books with me in the palm on my hand. This is finally it! I will never buy a traditional book again. The Kindle will revolutionize the publishing world and the way people read. Plus - my reading habit won't kill anymore trees. If reading is your passion, the Kindle will light your fire!
The downside of the Kindle November 15, 2008 9 out of 10 found this review helpful
I rarely write Amazon reviews, but I was inspired to by this product. It's hard to add to the countless reviews that have already been put up, so instead I'll just point out the potential "downsides."
Downside #1 --> Since I got used to reading on my Kindle, I no longer want to bother with a real book. At the time I received the Kindle as a (perfect) gift several months ago, I had 7 or 8 unread books on my shelf that were next in line for me to read, and all these months later, they are still unread. I just never felt like picking them up more than I felt like picking up my Kindle. (I'm actually tempted to buy the e-book versions of these books.) Before you get the Kindle and start using it actively, you have no idea how awkward it is to lug around a single book when you can bring along many in one package, especially when you also get your daily newspaper downloaded on it. I think those who will most appreciate the Kindle are people who live in dense urban centers, take public transportation, live on university campuses, frequent cafes, and/or generally spend a good amount of time reading outside the home. Joggers and auto commuters may also enjoy the audio-book feature, though I've never used this myself. That said, I think plenty of folks who don't fit any of the above will also enjoy it.
Downside #2 (a warning to the shy) --> Prepare to become an unofficial Kindle spokesperson as soon as you buy this product and start reading it in public places. The interest level from strangers is AMAZING. I just can't tell you how many times I'm in a cafe or in the subway or walking around, and people stop me to ask about my Kindle. Either they are interested for themselves, or they're telling me how much their wife, husband, brother, sister, friend, or whoever absolutely loves this thing. Speaking for myself, I love talking about the device. The first thing I do is show people a sample page, just so they can see how striking the e-ink technology is. Then, I tell them how easy it is to buy a book, how I don't like reading physical books anymore, yada yada yada. If there were any justice, Amazon would pay me a huge commission. Mr. Bezos, are you there?
Fantastic! November 15, 2008 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
I love my Kindle. It's simple, easy to use, convenient, up-to-date and fun to read on. I had been looking at purchasing a Kindle for over a year but was hesitant because I am a bit technologically challenged. I finally jumped in and bought one and have had no problems whatsoever with using it. It always elicits questions from observers in public places.....what a great way to meet fellow readers and show it off.
The best thing to happen to books since the first press November 15, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Let's face this that books have not changed much over the past decades. They are paper and you read them. As a traveler they also take up space, and space is more and more valuable with the new airline charges on baggage. I like to take books with me and I like to read different books all the time. This solves a lot of problems.
For you folks on the fence you're missing the fun by staying there. It's a bit to get used to but this is the first star trek thing yet. I have no flying car but in the size of a small paperback I can have a library of reading material.
Now for the folks that have not purchased this yet but want to trash this, I say you have not had the pleasure of hearing a book review on NPR and seconds later having it in your Kindle, yes that seconds. I love reading this in Borders or B&N since I can see all the books and buy them (at a discount) on my kindle and start reading right away.
I used tons of shelf space to keep books, now my kindle is my book shelves. Will there be better versions of this device, sure and maybe the price will come down but trust me the sheer enjoyment factor is worth any price.
I'm so sold on this product!!!!
I only enjoy reading this way now! November 15, 2008 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
I have had my Kindle for 2 weeks now. I was going to wait for a new version but when the Oprah special hit I went for it. I subscribed to the New York Times and bought 3 or 4 books right away. I find now that I really only enjoy reading this way now. For the New York Times I find it much easier to deal with. I focus on the stories and am not as easily distracted. Books are also easy to read in bed or anywhere. I love this product.
