5 out of 5 stars Etymontic Isolator Ear Buds   August 31, 2008
Great isolation. I use them when working in cube land. I just put them on without music... works great. Better that ear plugs and much more comfortable. When I do listen to music they are fanststic. The wires are a bit on the light side and do tangle.

5 out of 5 stars Great sound   August 27, 2008
I love The Etymotic Research ER6's because of the superior noise blocking. They basically work like $80 musical earplugs. The sound is pretty good, although it could probably be better. Just make sure you're wearing the earbuds right or the noise blocking won't work as well. They work so well for me though, that in order to hear someone talking, I have to take one out. These earbuds have great quality for the price.

4 out of 5 stars Work as advertised   August 26, 2008
I bought these primarily for the sound isolation features, and no batteries required. I read that the sound quality was above average, and I have found that to be true - much better than 'stock' MP3 earbuds, but don't expect $300 quality from a set of $80 earphones. The isolation feature works exceptionally well, even with the rubber earbud tips. I've found I don't need to use the foam tips (better isolation, but need frequent replacement - they get dirty). You really have to push these pretty far up your ear canal, but once in place you're in heavenly silence - with only your music. No jet noise, no crying babies or loud talkers - it's great. I found them no problem to remove either - just do it gently with a twist rather than a yank. I've worn them for three hours and found them to be pretty comfortable, but admittedly it was somewhat of a relief to get them out for a while - they do fit rather snugly. All in all they serve their purpose well. Plus they have a long cord and a handy clip.

4 out of 5 stars Good but need to be alert about filter   August 10, 2008
Have used this for more than one year. I don't have audiophile ears but feel the sound quality is excellent. Base is just fine for me. I wear these primarily during flying and the passive noise reduction works as well as active noise reduction headphones. The advantage over the latter is that I can lean my head on the side and they still work, unlike the headphones. The complaints by other users about the thin cord is not warranted. They have held up well and the pouch that came with it is very nice. The ear plugs take a little getting used to for prolonged wearing, much like breaking in a new pair of eye glasses.

My biggest complaint, and the reason why this is not 5 stars, are the filters that protect the earphone. It is easy to gunk up from ear wax. I had to change one of the filters within two months of purchasing the earphones. Etymotic provides two replacement filters and I used both within 6 months. Had to buy more filters from third party vendors and in the last 14-16 months, have used at least 6 filters total. I work in a lab and can use a dissecting microscope to clean out the ear plugs and filters, not what a typical user would do. Their instructions to rinse out the ear plugs regularly is a must. I am surprised that other users have not griped about this. My other pair is a Sennheiser CX300 and the fit is definitely better with the Etymotic, at least for my ears.

Overall, I am quite satisfied.

5 out of 5 stars ER6   August 2, 2008
Outstanding! I bought these to wear while riding a motorcycle, they surpassed my expectations. During moments of silence the earphones cancel noise nearly as well as regular earplugs but once the music comes on it's crystal clear. Also, they do not move when taking off or putting on a helmet. I would definitely buy these again.
