Light easy reading, but also fun and informative October 27, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
This is a really fun and yet heartfelt book; however, it's not Kafka or Plath, so don't expect to come away with the feeling that you're accomplished reading a major serious work of fiction. This is what I would call "chick lit," and it's actually the first type of this genre that I have read. Most likely my last, as this is not the type of fiction I gravitate towards, but I enjoyed reading it!
Fun read for a magazine addict October 27, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I love magazines for their shiny newness, their abundant illustrations, quick-to-read articles, and yes, I am a sucker for their tips for self-improvement. But do I ever actually follow through on their plans? Does anyone?
The author decides to try the magazines' advice for a year, since her own choices haven't been working so well. The result was entertaining and fun, especially if you have longed for the changes promised by those shiny headlines on the fronts of magazines.
Cute Book October 24, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I really enjoyed Up for Renewal by Cathy Alter. This book tells the story of how Cathy's yearning for a new and better life transformed into an interesting social experiment. In the end, Cathy determined that it was she who was to give her self a new life, no one, or thing, else. Through her unorthodox social experiment, Cathy found that everything good she desired could be found right within herself. It was a long and hard lesson to learn, but Cathy was so much happier because of it.
An Interesting Read October 23, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I found this book to be rather surprising. The author had what many people would consider an ideal life - she grew up in a middle-class family, is well-educated, had a decent-paying job, lived in busy, exciting city, and had good friends. Yet, as she delves deeper into her life, the reader learns about her dysfunctional childhood, her body image problems, her unhappiness with her career, and her poor love life. It just goes to show that appearances are only skin deep. The book was nothing earth-shattering, but was a nice, enjoyable, light read.
Fun and clever October 23, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
This is a book I could have written! A way to take all those magazine subscriptions and do something positive with them instead of having them stack up! As an avid magazine reader I saw a lot of myself in the author. Cathy Alter has written an engaging book that is more than just a story of her journey to change herself. It can be a book that many can relate to -- especially if they have ever thought about change and making their life over.
