5 out of 5 stars Loved it   May 19, 2008

i really loved this book. unlike many of the other reviewers, i have not yet read any of the author's previous books. i only picked this one up after seeing a review in people magazine and am very glad that i did! the strength of this book in my opinion is that the drama is not flashy or overblown or exaggerated to a ridiculous degree. everything that happens is so believable and real and i thought ellen was a really wonderful character. she is insecure and unhappy and impetuous, but also good-hearted and means well. i did think margot was a little flat as a character, but that is a minor flaw when compared to how wonderfully the love triangle between ellen, leo and andy is set up.

what makes this book so great is that it is so...everyday. these are real people facing a real situation and handling them in a realistic way. i will look forward to reading the other books by this author in the future. i can certainly say that this one is a fantastic read, however.

2 out of 5 stars Disappointed   May 19, 2008

I too was disappointed by this much anticipated book. I loved the first 2, Baby Proof was ok, but this one left me flat. I kept waiting for something to happen, but nothing ever did. It was basically someone with a pretty darn good life whining about what she didn't have.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent read   May 19, 2008

I thought this was really well done. At first, I thought the plot -- ex-boyfriend v. husband -- was old and tired. But Giffin always brings a very nuanced eye to her books, and her character development (particularly with the female characters), was wonderful as always. You forget that they are not real people. I think she also did a great deal of research into photography to make the protagonist's career convincing.

I won't give away the plot -- basically, Ellen is married to Andy, then runs into heartbreaker Leo, who starts e-mailing her -- but it yielded a number of interesting insights. The book was a great ride, and a return to form after the somewhat disappointing Baby Proof.

3 out of 5 stars Not as good as the others   May 19, 2008

I loved all of Giffin's 1st 3 books, as they were my intro into "chick-lit". With each of the 1st 3 I was sad to see them end, so I also anxiously awaited this new release. I'm halfway through this one, and it is not as good as the other 3. It is still pretty good, but just relatively speaking it is not as compelling a read as the other 3. I had purchased it, but my library reserve copy was ready the same day, so i took the purhased copy back to B&N. I'm glad I did now. It's a great read for a library book.

3 out of 5 stars So-So   May 19, 2008

I was looking forward to getting sucked into another book by Emily Giffin. Couldn't wait for it to come out, since I enjoyed Baby Proof, Something Borrowed, & Something Blue. I loved the characters in her first 3 books, Ellen I didn't care for. I couldn't root for her at all. To think Leo would just not look for Ellen after his confrontation with Margot, was just the turning point of the book that had me going, "Come on!". Not thrilled at all, hope the next one is better.
