3 out of 5 stars Good tips, but not a life philosophy   April 20, 2008

Certainly, all of us must be inspired by Randy's courage in making his remaining days a public journey. I don't think as some reviewers, that he is doing so because of ego, I think he's just a teacher at heart, and feels this is something worthwhile to give to his students. I definitely agree with much of his philosophy. My disappointment is his testimony that he is not interested in seeking out his Creator. Is the main purpose in life just to have fun? Why not have fun with joy and peace and reconciliation with Jesus Christ as well? I hope God will somehow see fit to grant Randy many more years. But, if not, I hope he will once again consider that, in dieing, "the dust shall return to the earth as it was: and the spirit shall return unto God who gave it." Ecclesiastes 12:7

4 out of 5 stars A great communicator!   April 20, 2008

I consumed Pausch's ABC TV interview, two video lectures (the "last lecture" itself and one on time management), and the book in a few days. His situation given his young family is a heartbreaker, but this book stands by itself as wise life lessons from a fairly young man. Pausch is a fantastic communicator and I strongly recommend that readers Google his lectures. The stream-of-consciousness delivery works well given his energy and personality. With truisms like "Time is all we have and you may find one day you have less than you think", he quickly grabs your attention and then keeps it with insightful stories and humor. The book is a bit more personal than the lectures and Pausch focuses more on leaving a message for his young children - he does seem primarily concerned about the "first three copies".

I am thankful that this author had a forum to communicate his potentially final thoughts, for his sake, his family's sake, and for mine as the reader. If he does succumb to the illness, the world will be a sadder place without him.

I have seen this man interviewed on tv several times and it touched my heart and life just to listen to him. I had to have the book. It's a keeper and will be one I will read over and over again.

Erica Asahan review on THE LAST LECTURE:

In this book, it comes through very clearly, Randy Pausch is a man who's unbelievably loving, civilized, well-brought-up and brave. I think that's the value of his Last Lecture. Pausch clearly isn't of a philosophical curve of mind. If you have the chance to read his book looking for profound existential discussions about human infirmity and mortality you're not going to find them. I have no doubt that, since the assault of his illness, he and his wife have endured despondent shady nights of the soul, paralyzing bouts of panic, and heart-pounding rage against the dying of the light. But except for very rare intimations, Pausch draws a veil over such episodes, and instead offers a mixture of autobiographical reflections and homespun tips on making the most of life (such as managing time, re-thinking priorities, and learning to listen to others). As he tells us, his final lecture to us is about life more than death.
