5 out of 5 stars Guaranteed Improvement   February 1, 2008
A great read! guaranteed to improve your game ... and ... your enjoyment on the course (regardless of your handicap). Provides specific 'games' and ideas that truly make it possible to 'have a purpose' with every shot. Their 'point' system regarding 'hitting fairways', 'up and downs', '1-putts' , etc ... is very inventive and easy to apply while playing. So impressed, I bought 3 more as Christmas gifts for my playing partners - and they have all said the same things about the book! You will be happy with this purchase - easy to read and use!

5 out of 5 stars A Purpose for every Shot!   January 14, 2008
My first time on the course after reading and applying the recomendations written in this book, I was able to hit seven out of nine fairways on the front nine, instead of my usual, just two! Lynn Marriott & Pia Nilsson have a unique way of helping a player to realize that they CAN improve their oncourse play and reduce their scores. Their unique approach to focus on this shot, has helped me to stay within the fairways, even on the narrow courses, and improve my opportunities to make more birdies. I reccommend this book for every golfer, it will be a valuable resource, just like "5 Fundamentals of the Modern Golf Swing" by Ben Hogan. If you read and apply just a few of the principles in "Every Shot Must Have A Purpose" a golfer will soon see dramatic improvements in their game and enjoyment.

5 out of 5 stars A very good and practical book about mental golf   January 4, 2008
I liked the hands-on aproach to mental golf with practical mental training tips of this book.

The book really showed that mental golf is the most crucial part of the game especially the stress management. No matter how good your swing is in the range it doesn't matter if the tension under pressure breaks the swing in the actual course.

The stories and quotations from PGA tour showed the different mental game practices and their importance for the pros and also clearly shows what separates the best from the top.

In the heart of the authors thinking is the idea of a playing focus which helps the mind to be concentrated on the task at hand with simple tasks to focus on while playing. The vague concept is explained in the course of the book very thoroughly with practical mental training tips and methods to follow one's progress. I liked the process oriented aproach of the book. The excellent results are a product of a process and not an end in itself.

The book has the most lucid definition that I have ever seen of the concept "being in the zone" or a state of optimal functioning of a human mind and body that is associated with peak performance in all the sports. It really opened my eyes to see what I as a recretional player and the golf teachers usually do to prevent this state from happening: the conscious thinking of the swing mechanics when preparing for the shot and hitting the ball. This prevents the body to do what comes correctly on natural instincs. It is like riding a bicycle: you don't have to think about it to do it. Thinking makes it more difficult.

Although I have read a lot about mental training I really thought this book was helpfull because it helps to bring the abstract and difficult ideas to practice. It shows that the mental skills are not self evident and learning them takes more effort and commitment than learning the physical side of the game.

5 out of 5 stars Every Shot must have a purpose   October 10, 2007
Absolutely brilliant, not only helped my golf but my attitude towards it plus life in general. Teaches that when it comes down to it we can do anything we put our mind to.

5 out of 5 stars "Must have book for your mental game"   August 31, 2007
At first when I got this book, I thought this was just another book to help you with your mental game. But after reading this book, I find it has help me focus on every shot. I like their idea of "think box" and "play box". I find when I'm ready to swing that I had so many swing thoughts that it would really mess me up when I swing. The authors kept it simple to where I did all my thinking in the "think box" (choose target, type of swing, etc). Once you cross the line and stepped into the "play box" all you do is just focus on the target and just swing. I find myself hitting closer to the target and not all over the fairway.

The other ideas mentioned in the book are really helpful. Keeping positive thoughts as opposed to negative thoughts when you swing helps. If all you do is focus on avoiding the bunker or water, well guess what happens your shot ends up in the bunker or water. I am having a lot more fun playing a round of golf after reading this book.

I highly recommend this book for help with your mental game!
