4 out of 5 stars The more things change...   September 5, 2007

...the more frustrated I get.

First of all, writing a review for a pair of pants seems a little silly. But Levi's Loose Fit Jeans have been my favorite pants for years now. I like the way they fit, from top-to-bottom: especially the tapered legs, the way they sit around the waist and how they're cut in the crotch. I've always had big thighs and a big rear - even when I was in shape - and the seam in most pants literally crushes my groin area. Now that I'm a little >ahem< lets say pudgy around the middle, it's getting harder and harder to find pants that fit right and don't make me feel like a moose.

I've always loved the Levi brand - ever since high school. So when I could no longer fit into a pair of regular 501's, I jumped right into the 560's. Other than preferring the 501's button down fly over the 560's zipper, and the fact that the quality of denim doesn't seem as rugged in the 560's, I'd hoped they'd never change.

And then, of course, as per the way things go, Levi's went and changed the 560 brand from 'Loose Fit' into 'Comfort Fit', and all of a sudden, I hate the things. The back pockets are too small. The belt loops, which were plentiful (seven of 'em) and sewn in perfect position to support the pants in the 'Loose Fit' style, are now down by (I think) two... and they were re-adjusted along the waist band for the 'Comfort Fit'. So as a result, now I'm constantly hitching the dang pants up. I feel a lot like a much skinnier version of Chris Farley doing his Matt Foley, motivational speaker bit from SNL. The cut's completely different too - much baggier in the legs than before.

I expect change. I understand that quality control can be all over the place. I know fashion tastes differ over time, and very likely the 560 brand doesn't have the same appeal that it did ten years ago. However, I'm not a teenager anymore, or even in my 20's, and I don't want to dress like I am. I don't want my pants to hang off my back end. I don't want to feel like I'm dressed in a denim balloon. I want to be able to fit my wallet into my pocket without having to cram it in. Unlike shoes, where major brands undergo constant changes year after year, I expect my favorite pants to stay the same - especially a signature line of jeans from Levi Strauss.

So - instead of messing with the 560's, why not just add new styles to the catalog, and leave good enough alone? Bring me back the Loose Fit jeans from a few years ago, and I'll be a happy camper. I promise, I'll keep buying 'em.

Please?
