Simplify your Life May 16, 2008 This remote is worthwhile even if being used for one reason- to turn on and off and set the system components for different activities in a home theater. It turns on the proper AV Receiver(s)(one or both of two JVCs), selects the proper input source, turns on the HD projector (Optoma) when viewing is part of the activity, turns on the DVD player, and easily turns everything off when an activity is finished. It can be used for volume and channel changing (and some other tasks like PIP, screen formatting, PVR, etc.), but the original remotes are fine for that and better suited to things like channel surfing (the volume buttons on the Logitech are the one annoyance if you have to use only this remote- they are narrow strips that surround the disc in the middle of the device and are almost impossible to get your fingers on). Even with this minor demand, the remote is well worth the money and allows other family members to basically push one button and do their activity (including listening to music in different areas of the house, watch DVDs, play the Wii, watch satellite TV, etc.).
Mushy buttons May 15, 2008 I loved the functionality of this unit -- the macros could set everything in my home theater exactly as I wanted it for gaming, movies and TV. However, I ended up upgrading to an 880 because the button feedback just wasn't there.
Great remote - Save your Money and Buy this May 15, 2008 The 550 is a great Universal remote to own - it is well designed , ergonomically balanced and good looking as well.
Set up is a breeze and the new version of the software resolves all issues. I used a Mac based platform but that should not be a hurdle. The logitech database is extensive and contains most devices that an average person will encounter/posses.
The keys are well laid out and respond well and the backlighting is good, I wish the Volume keys were also made of rubber like the number keys - they would have felt better - than the current hard plastic key - since the volume key is the one that gets most play.
There have been reports that the response with Samsung TV's is slow but this has been fixed now and the thing runs my AV set up with more than 8 components like a dream in both individual and Activity Mode.
After using several of the harmony's more expensive remotes - I think the 550 is still the best value in terms of functions and price, nowhere is this more apparent then when you compare it with the Harmony One. You pay $200+ to get a touch screen, based remote with the same functionality as the 550 which you get for $80, or less if you search for deals.
Buy the 550 and save the rest of money for gas !
Enjoy.
Best sub-$100 remote May 15, 2008 The computer based software that programs this remote works fine for me; I have not experienced any problems as others describe. The buttons are laid out nicely and the bottom of the remote is designed with two different ergonomic hand positions, depending on whether you're using the directional buttons or the play, stop, rr, ff buttons, which is nice. The bottom has a rubberized coating for a nice feel. The activity buttons, the directional buttons, and the select button "click" very noticeably when pressed, but the rubber buttons are silent. I have two annoyances: when selecting an activity, it does take several seconds for the remote to complete sending commands to all the devices involved (i.e., tv, av receiver, satellite receiver). If it were able to do this more quickly, you wouldn't have to continue holding the remote pointing at your equipment so long. Also, if you have a device that is not in the Logitec database, the remote can learn commands manually by pointing your original remote at the Harmony remote so it can "see" the IR signal. Unfortunately, you have about a 1/1000 chance of finding the perfect angle, distance, and duration of the button press for the Harmony remote to see the signal correctly. I don't know if this is the fault of the original remote or the Harmony remote, but it sure is annoying. Overall, I was able to program the remote to do everything I wanted--but the learning curve is pretty steep.
Why did it take so long? May 14, 2008 The Harmony universal remote was exactly as advertised, worked with all the devices that are programmed in it and it makes viewing TV, watching a dvd, or just listening to music so easy and enjoyable.
