Eee PC 1000 XP 6-Cell September 7, 2008 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
This is a beautiful computer. It has a shiny, smooth, black case that is much more attractive than I thought it would be. It boots up om less than a minute and you're ready to go.
On the downside, the keyboard is very small, but this wouldn't be a problem if the touch pad weren't so sensitive. You must constantly watch the screen when you're typing or else you'll lose track of the cursor. I use a wireless mouse, but when using a mouse the touch pad does not disable. This is more of a problem than you might think. You have to be very careful when you're typing. XP works well and Works has a great word processor. I tried to download Norton, but I kept getting a message that it won't work with this version of XP. For the Internet, I downloaded Firefox. However Forefox and Explorer drop out very once in a while. You'll be in the middle of a search, and suddenly you're back to your desktop. I got the six cell battery and I'd guess the real life using the word processor is about 4.5 hours, but I haven't run it completely out.
All in all, I love this computer. I bought it to write out on the road and, for that purpose it works great. The next time I buy one, however, I will opt for a larger keyboard, and a disabled touch pad.
I love it! September 6, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I bought an Asus Eee PC 701 4G as a secondary laptop when they first came out and was the envy of everyone that saw it. I immediately installed an nlited version of XP Pro and installed 1GB of ram. I thought I really had something and liked it even though the screen was a little small for me.
Then I heard about 900 and the 901. Pass! Not impressed. Then along came the Eee PC 1000H. Right up my alley. Had to have it. Sold my 701 and ordered the 1000H. LOVE IT, LOVE IT! As others have noted, the right shift key is out of place, but I am not a touch typist so it doesn't matter to me. Not crazy about the glossy exterior finish because it shows every little smudge of a finger print, but again, only a minor annoyance. The LED backlit display is really bright. So much so that you can turn it way down and still see it good while also conserving battery power. I like the nice sized multi-touch trackpad, although the buttons are a little stiff. My favorite feature is the built in bluetooth. Yes I know they now make itty bitty dongles that you can leave in the computer, but I don't want anything sticking out the side of my computer. Besides, it would then be taking up an otherwise useful usb port. With one mouse click I can connect to my T-Mobile Blackberry Curve through bluetooth to sync, transfer a file or connect to the internet and not miss a call. I love that! I also use a bluetooth Microsoft 5000 laptop mouse, bluetooth stereo headset for watching movies or listening to music, and my bluetooth headset for my phone also works with Skype. The much improved camera resolution is great with Skype. I don't know where they got that 7hr battery life spec from. I seem to get about 4.5 - 5hrs with wifi and bluetooth on. I could go on and on, but you get the point, it's just great.
I read a lot of reviews and was initially leaning toward the MSI Wind until the price of the 1000H came down, then it was a no brainer for me. I didn't get into all the technical aspects of it because there are plenty of tech reviews for that. I just want to let you know my overall opinion coming from an average Joe with 2 desktops (1 Dell, 1 HP) and 3 other laptops (1 Sony, 2 Dells), that I am more than pleased with my 1000H and will be using it MUCH more than the 701 4G it replaced. By the way, I didn't notice the keyboard flex or fan noise that others have mentioned.
I love Amazon for the free shipping and no tax. Go Amazon!
Eee PC 1000H "Excellent Product" September 5, 2008 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
Received Eee PC 1000H today on time. Opened it up and followed installation instructions. Set Up was very easy, I got on internet using "Wired Connection" and "WireLess Connection" I can type on key board just like a full size computer. EXCEPT: As noted by others "Right Shift Key" is a pain to use. I can live with that though. Other than that I am very happy with purchase. I used it for 4 hours pluged into AC power, it never got overly warm. I am thinking of buying a second one for my wife. Comes with nice slip case w/zipper. I also ordered a stick of 2GB memory to replace the 1GB stick, but it has not arrived, yet. But, to tell you the truth it runs very fast, just using 1 GB. I installed firewall, Antivirus and surfed internet, at same speeds as my desktop. VERY HAPPY WITH THIS LAPTOP. ASUS EeePC 1000H out in the boondocks September 5, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I received my 1000H two weeks ago and have done the following: Upgraded it with the 2GB OCZ memory board, bought a LG 'Slim' external DVD/CD Rewriter, and installed a Western Digitial external 320GB HD. Everything is working like a charm. I used a lots of the feedback from previous reviews and for that I thank those who took time to provide the info. I travel to China for 6 months at a time so when I go, I need to be pretty self sufficient. China uses 220VAC and the power brick accomodates this. The LG DVD rewriter powers easily with the supplied USB cable, no need for the additional power cable supplied with the LG. The WD HD works with the USB cable supplied. No external power is required. All in all everything can be packed in a small package. I use an old Iomega drive case I got at the swapmeet for a couple of bucks. I needed something that could allow me to access the Internet. I can get cable WB access most places I travel. I needed a text writer/editor like 'Word' for the documents I write. The supplied text writer works well for what I need. I needed storage space and backup for a large quantity of photos I take and the 1000H and the WD HD does it. From time to time I need to install new software when I am away from home base so the LG takes care of that. Everything so far seems to play well together. I have synch my desktop, laptop, and the 1000H for all the photo processing and text editing features I wanted. The WD HD does this remarkably well. BTW, I use Mozilla Firefox as my browser. This is an unbeatable combination! Now lets see if it is as reliable and workable as it now seems. I have no problems with the display, my keyboard seems fairly stiff, and everything plays well together. I'm a happy camper! My only minor complaint is the buttons for power and the various speed, screen size, etc are awkward to push because they are rather small.
Disappointed September 4, 2008 2 out of 8 found this review helpful
I was disappointed with this product. The 1000H looks so cute and sounds so good. I had considered several netbooks and selected this one because of the specs and because I had previously owned an Asus 7" Surf and loved it. I booted the 1000H up and the poor screen resolution stopped me in my tracks.
Font displayed blurry and fuzzy. Looking at the screen and trying to read really bothered me. I've used pcs/laptops from a number of different brands, everything from Averatec to Gateway to HP, but I've never seen a screen where text is so hard to read and so uncomfortable to look at.
I spent a good bit of time browsing the alarming large section of Eee User forum that dealt with issues people were having. I made note of all info relating to my own issue which turned out to software rather than hardware. After implementing all recommended changes, downloads, etc and adding a few tweaks of my own. I now have a screen that I can use, but it's not as good as other pcs that I've used. I still strongly feel that some as basic as this shouldn't require extensive tweaking to be usable.
I agree with one of the other reviews who disliked the keyboard. Mine feels 'delicate' as if it might easily fall apart. It doesn't have a good typing feel. While the size of the keyboard is bigger than on the 7" Surf, the buttons seem too small to me and I wear a small to XS glove size. On the whole, the Surf felt more solidly built. It also required no tweaking and had excellent screen display compared to the 1000H.
As some reviewers noted the cover is of the kind that smudges easily and Asus does provide a wipe. I intend to purchase a skin for it as the simplest resolution for that annoyance. The 1000H is nice and light and easy to tote, but so are other netbooks.
On the whole, I wish that I had purchased something else, and the next time that I am in the market for a netbook, I shall.
