Amazon.com The teaming of Steve Martin and Goldie Hawn would seem to have been sure-fire casting, but Housesitter's writing is never strong enough to sustain it and the film's hit-and-miss quality has more misses than hits. Martin plays an architect who builds his dream house for his high school sweetheart (Dana Delany), then surprises her with a marriage proposal--both of which she rejects. Distraught, he goes back to New York and pours out his heart to a woman he meets in a bar and beds (Hawn), not realizing she is a flaky con artist. She knows a good thing when she hears it and heads for his hometown, moves into the empty dream house, and begins passing herself off as Martin's new wife. Though the writers build in a variety of complications (involving Delany, as well as Martin's parents and boss), the film finds its jokes only in fits and starts, though Martin has a particularly hilarious moment when he must sing to his father in front of a crowd of strangers. --Marshall Fine

My favorite movie July 21, 2008 I don't tend to watch movies over and over. However, I do have favorites and do watch them again and again over the years. For both my wife and me, this is the number one favorite. We watch it about twice a year. As others here have mentioned, it is a mood elevator. I ease into it with anticipation until the chair shopping scene. After that, I just go with the flow of it on my cloud nine all the way through.
FRANK OZ, OPUS 6 February 16, 2008 **** 1992. Directed by Frank Oz. A mythomaniac woman revolutionizes the life of a depressed architect. The couple Steve Martin-Goldie Hawn's performance can be compared to those found in the best American comedies of the 30's and the 40's. Highly recommended.
Good movie February 13, 2008 I bought this movie for my wife. It's a good, fun, happy movie. Light-hearted and doesn't take itself too seriously. There are plenty of quirky characters and the setting in New England is beautiful. Once more, there aren't too many special features which is a bit of an irritant.
Bring back memories February 8, 2008 Seriously I dont even remember the first or the last time I saw this movie...I think I was still a kid,at home watching it with my parents. Steve Martin & Goldie Hawn make a good and very funny couple onscreen. My dad was sooooo happy watching this movie again that he watched it 2 times straight.
WHO IS MARSHALL FINE? October 30, 2007 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
This is a very funny and rewatchable movie, but Marshall Fine dislikes it. It seems that every movie Marshall Fine dislikes, I like. Did he really watch this movie?
