Amazon.com Kathy Smith has been around a while in the world of fitness videos, and with good reason. Her calm, authoritative manner, flawless timing, emphasis on proper form, and responsible directions put her entire fitness series a cut above most celebrity workouts. Pregnancy Workout is no exception. Smith and five workout buddies (all of them appearing to be well past the fifth month of pregnancy) demonstrate a good 50-minute prenatal workout, with an ample warmup period, a cardio section that includes sufficient upper-body work, plenty of safe abdominal and pelvic-floor exercises, and an active relaxation period (which some avid aerobicizers may find a bit too long). Smith uses props such as chairs and pillows to allow effective exercise while maintaining an emphasis on safety and comfort. There's also an excellent section on getting back up to working out postpartum, with a set of simple exercises that can be done within a day or two after delivery (and even a few stretches for the baby, which Smith demonstrates with her adorable infant daughter). Gynecological authorities appear in the video as well to give advice on prenatal exercise and to answer common postnatal questions on such topics as resuming exercise after a C-section and timing exercise around breastfeeding. The baby-block and teddy-bear graphics are a little too cutesy, and those used to working out to high-energy Top 40 hits may find the music extremely bland, but the exercise itself is always the focus, making this one of the best pregnancy workouts available. --Barrie Trinkle

So much fun! February 6, 2010 S. Dearolf (Bainbridge, PA) I am 15 weeks pregnant and have been using this DVD for about 7 weeks. I love it! I live in Pennsylvania and the winter weather has kept me indoors more than I like. This is a really fun a workout for the cold months. It is really dated, but it doesn't distract from the quality. Also, Kathy Smith is really likeable and not annoying.
Pretty Good Workout February 2, 2010 A. Vessels (Okinawa, Japan) I only use this video once every couple of weeks so it never really gets old. The 80's outfits and definitely different, but overall it is a great workout. It's pretty easy so I am never sore the next day. I like that it incorporates both cardio and weights unlike several pregnancy workouts that I have tried. I am 31 weeks along and don't have any problems performing any of the moves in this video!
My favorite preggers workout! September 1, 2009 A. Owens 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I bought three pregnancy workouts: 1. Kathy Smith: Pregnancy Workout 2. Leisa Hart's Fit Mama 3. The Perfect Pregnancy Workout Vol 1.
I have done all three and by far my favorite is Kathy Smith: Pregnancy Workout. It offers about 20 minutes of cardio, 15 mins of weight training, 5 min cooldown, and a relaxation/lamaze section. Of the three dvds it's the only one that really raised my heart rate and got me sweating a little bit, so I actually felt like I got a decent workout. Do be warned that its very 1980's, but if you can laugh at that, you will really benefit from the workout!
Oldie, but Goodie July 29, 2009 Doc Bee 7 out of 7 found this review helpful
I own other prenatal workout videos, and this is one of my favorite. Before becoming pregnant, I worked out regularly and wanted something that would keep me active and engaged. While it is quite dated, I like that this has a pretty good cardio section. There is an 11 minute warm-up, which is kind of slow, and then 18 minutes of pure aerobics. The moves are kind of cheesy, but safely have you sweating. It seems like so many workout videos for pregnant women want to steer clear of any real cardio, and if they have a separate cardio section, it is very easy and does nothing for your heart rate. This is a very comprehensive workout, and it seems almost a new moms guide to pregnancy. There are interviews with doctors asking most commonly asked questions. There also is an extensive postnatal workout section, giving you details as to what days to do what sort of exercises. I have never seen anything this extensive in the videos I have owned I also like the fact that there are several pregnant women in all stages of pregnancy working out. I workout regularly (before, during, and after pregnancy), and I feel like I get a good workout from this. Again, it is very dated and some moves are quite corny, but I like Kathy's style- very calm and instructive. I have this, Erin O Brian's Prenatal Fitness Fix, and the Perfect Pregnancy Workout. I rotate among these three heavily, and feel like I do well overall with all three of them.
Once I was side stepping and clapping, I knew it was over!! July 13, 2009 S. Ludlow (Santa Cruz, California) This was the most cheesy workout DVD I have ever encountered! Unless you are a die hard 80's fan that still wears leg warmers and camel toe leotards, don't get this DVD! I was clapping and side stepping, trying to keep up with the work out. The music was terrible and to be honest, I didn't even break a sweat for the ten minutes that I worked out to it--that's how long I gave it a chance before I turned it off and never returned to it EVER again!
