In this inspirational costume drama, Michael Apted (49 Up) recounts a period in British history sure to be unfamiliar to most Americans. In fact, his eye-opening biography of 18th century abolitionist William Wilberforce (Ioan Gruffudd) is likely to come as a revelation to many Britons, as well. After all, despite the presence of his wife, Barbara (Romola Garai), this isn't a particularly "sexy" story, but it is a powerful one. The title comes from John Newton's hymn "Amazing Grace" ("I once was lost but now am found"). Newton (Albert Finney) was a former slaveholder, who became a clergyman and spent his days repenting. While America had John Brown, England had Wilberforce, and Newton is one of many who helped the MP to abolish slavery in the UK. The story begins towards the end of Wilberforce's mission when he's sick with colitis and addicted to laudanum. Apted continues to alternate between 1797 and 1789, when Wilberforce was fitter and more idealistic, and ends in 1807 as his efforts come to fruition. Apted and writer Steven Knight (Dirty Pretty Things) do right by their hero. Unlike Amistad, however, slaves are largely off-screen, with the exception of author Equiano (Senegalese vocalist Youssou N'Dour). Amazing Grace reserves its focus for the politicians who risked their reps for the greater good, like Wilberforce and Prime Minister Pitt (an excellent Benedict Cumberbatch), and those more concerned with the income slavery provided their constituents, like Lord Tarleton (Ciaran Hinds) and the Duke of Clarence (Toby Jones). --Kathleen C. Fennessy

This is a beautifully made movie, a great family movie who craves to know history and have real live heroes in a age of made-up ones.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Movie About an Even Greater Story   September 7, 2008
The true story about an unlikely hero with a non-heroic name, William Wilberforce. The title of the movie comes from his association with and inspiration from the author of the greatest hymn and greatest work of Christian music ever written, "Amazing Grace". The unlikely songwriter was reformed and repentant Christian ex-slave trader, John Newton, who, like Wilberforce, was a prime example of the liberal abolitionist Christians of the 18th and 19th centuries. These great men provide a stark contrast between the conservative pseudo-Christians of today, who march in near total lockstep with the conservative business and political agenda, with the real Christian progressives (i.e., liberals) of yesteryear and today. As accurately portrayed in the movie, the Christian liberal abolitionists squared-off in a David vs. Goliath mismatch against the united conservative business and political juggernaut of their time, in this case united behind the fortunes being made in the slave trade. Instead of a civil war ending slavery, the British experienced the ending of this abomination due almost 100% to the determined efforts of the Christian abolitionists portrayed in the movie.
The movie does a great job of capturing and portraying the dogged determination, principled perseverance, and ultimate victory of as unlikely a group of successful and inspirational protagonists as could be imagined. Also shown are their moments of defeat and despair that make their story the substance of real life, as well as the monumental forces resistant to changing the financially rewarding status quo they faced.

5 out of 5 stars Uttterly Amazing Grace   September 6, 2008
Amazing Grace is one of the most passionate and beautifully made movies that I've seen in a long time. This 2007 film tells the true tale of William Wilberforce, a member of the British Parlament in the 18th and 19th centuries, who worked tirelessly to end the British slave trade. Invest in this engaging film and you will not regret a second of it. Ioan Gruffudd (pronounced Yoan Griffid),the Fantastic Four movies, turns in a powerhouse performance as Wilberforce, He is not alone in this the others in the cast include Rufus Sewell,(from The Illusionist,he plays good guy this time) Michael Gambon(the later Harry Potter movies),the Romola Garai, Ciaran Hinds(Rome), Toby Jones, and Albert Finney as the author of the much loved and much sung title hymn.

I will tell you that when I borrowed this move from my library, after waiting over a month for it, I almost didn't give it back. I REALLY LOVED THIS MOVIE!!!!
