The often breathtaking, final installment in the Bourne trilogy finds the titular assassin with no memory closing in on his past, finally answering his own questions about his real identity and how he came to be a seemingly unstoppable killing machine. Matt Damon returns for another intensely physical performance as Jason Bourne, the rogue operative at war with the CIA, which made him who and what he is and managed to kill his girlfriend in the series' second film, The Bourne Supremacy. Now looking for payback, Bourne goes in search for the renegade chief of CIA operations in Europe and North Africa, partnering for a time with a mysterious woman from his past (Julia Stiles) and constantly--constantly--on the run from assassins, intelligence foot soldiers, and cops. Directed by Paul Greengrass (United 93) with the director's thrilling, trademark textures and shaky, documentary style, The Bourne Ultimatum is largely a succession of action scenes that reveal a lot about the story's characters while they're under duress. Joan Allen, Albert Finney, David Strathairn, Scott Glenn, and Paddy Considine comprise the film's terrific supporting cast, and the well-traveled movie leads viewers through Turin, Madrid, Tangiers, Paris, London, and New York. Overall, this is a satisfying conclusion to Bourne's exciting and protracted mystery. --Tom Keogh

4 out of 5 stars Bourne is back and exciting as ever   July 25, 2008
Bourne is back for the third installment of the series. If you haven't seen the first two, they aren't necessary, but I would highly recommend them. In this episode, Bourne is more reflective as he tries to piece together his past. The reflection does not last long before chase scenes and fighting sets in. The story is good, as are the action sequences. I enjoyed it thoroughly.

While the action genre is not my favorite, I do enjoy an occasional action show. And since my brother had a new surround sound stereo to go with his new big screen, it was an ideal time to enjoy. I think that if you view them in moderation, they are much better individually.

1 out of 5 stars Don/t Buy   July 23, 2008

This DVD is a real time waster. Don't buy it. It's the worst I've seen for forcing you to watch all their ads and promos before you get to the film. Buying it will only encourage Universal to make more DVDs like this one. Rent it or borrow it from a library instead.

5 out of 5 stars Great Chase Movie   July 21, 2008
1 out of 1 found this review helpful

Just saw this movie this past weekend.

I thought it was one of all time great chase movies. Reminded me of the French Connection in several places because of the great photography of the chase scenes with great location shooting throughout Europe.

The movie starts with little exposition. If you watch the extra on filming in Berlin first, it explains that this movie starts 5 minutes after the second movie ended. I had not seen the second movie in several years.

More of a chase movie than a plot movie, but I thought it was fantastic.

3 out of 5 stars Pretty much the same film as the previous two   July 11, 2008

Incomprehensibly filmed and edited, The Bourne Ultimatum is basically a variation of The Bourne Supremacy, which itself was a remake of The Bourne Identity. Ultimatum follows the exact same formula as those films, with Bourne being hunted by his superiors and then bringing them to justice.

As expected, there's a claustrophoic fist fight, a car chase, a foot chase, and many scenes with Bourne outmanuevering his pursuers. There's also a Tangiers rooftop escape that was stolen straight out of the James Bond film The Living Daylights.

What makes Ultimatum better than Supremacy? Simply put, it's more exciting and the action sequences are better-staged. Ultimatum is not a bad film, but it still pales in comparison to Doug Liman's first Bourne film.
