In the first season of The X-Files, creator Chris Carter was uncertain of the series' future, so each of the episodes is a self-contained suspense story; they do not delve deep into the ongoing X-Files mythology or turn to self-parody and humor as do episodes in later seasons. Yet, these episodes display the elements for which the show would become famous: the cinematic production values and top-notch special effects, the stark lighting of the Vancouver sets, the atmospheric halo of Mark Snow's score, and the clever plots dealing with subjects ranging from the occult, religion, and monsters to urban legends, conspiracy theories, and science fiction. Most importantly, season 1 introduces FBI agents Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson) and Fox "Spooky" Mulder (David Duchovny), two of the most attractive government officials around. Scully is the serious-minded medical scientist assigned to join Mulder on the X-Files, a division of the FBI dealing with the paranormal. Mulder is the intuitive thinker with a dry wit, a passionate believer in the existence of paranormal phenomena and one of the few characters on television smart enough to figure out who the bad guy is before the audience does. Their muddled relationship, a deep friendship laced with sexual tension, provides the human heart in a world where the bizarre and horrible lurk in everyday society.

Those unfamiliar with The X-Files often view all the fuss with the same skepticism with which Scully first regards her new partner's ideas. But just as she comes to realize the uncanny accuracy of Mulder's outlandish theories, newcomers to The X-Files who sample a few episodes in this boxed set will likely find themselves riveted to their television late into the night. And undoubtedly, the shadows and creaking noises in the house that evening will seem more menacing than usual. --Eugene Wei

4 out of 5 stars The Best Three Episodes from the X-Files!   September 19, 2008
Jose Chung's 'From Outer Space'.. War of the Coprophages.. and Clyde Bruckman's Final Repose by the amazing Darin Morgan are found in the third season! This alone was the worth of this purchase.

5 out of 5 stars The beginning of a true classic!!   September 17, 2008
You can't rank any TV show as "excellent" if you haven't watched this!! This is the beginning of the story, and a thrilling/exciting story it will be -for another 8 season and 2 movies, so far-.
Meet Agents Mulder and Scully and get involved in their quest for the Truth (yeah, with a capital letter) and see how "The Partnership" is formed and developed (yeah, theirs is "the partnership", the one and only, many times imitated, never succesfully reproduced).
Two little advices to truly enjoy: Expect to be surprised and amazed and learn to question everything/everyone. Happy X Files initiation!!

4 out of 5 stars A Very Good Season, Not THE Best Though...   August 28, 2008

X-Files season 3. Ah, bliss. The show had not yet become overly complicated, and the dismal days of Doggett and Reyes were far off. Just Mulder and Scully and some good old fashioned recurring conspiracy characters for ya!
I like this season. It is one of the top four I would say, and many people will disagree, calling it the best set of episodes the series has to offer. I couldn't argue with that, it just all has to do with personal preference.
Season 3 is actually pretty lighthearted, with some interesting twists and turns intertwined throughout. The mythology episodes in this season, however, are some of my least favorite, dealing with the alien healer Jeremiah Smith, the black oil, and a digital recorder with evidence of an alien conspiracy. This does have an exception, however. "Nisei" and "731", especially the latter, are two of the most exceptional episodes ever created. It is also a delight to witness Alex Krycek under control of the black cancer, towards the end of the season. Let's just say that when it leaves his body in the abandoned missile silo, chills ran up my spine. Truly haunting!
As far as monster of the week episodes go, I have to say I wasn't a huge fan of this bunch. "Avatar" wad particularly annoying for me, adding a convoluted Skinner plotline and just throwing out the paranormal element in the middle of the episode. There are also many comic elements to these MOTW episodes. Jose Chung is possibly the most famous comic X-Files episode. Personally, I like the darker, more frightening episodes the best, but nontheless these are all a delight to watch.
"Quagmire", while not scary in the least, is a very fun episode because it almost tricks you into thinking that Mulder is wrong just this one time, but then again the truth is never what it seems. Keep an eye out for this one, there is a great balance of chemistry between Mulder and Scully.
The special features are in abundance here, with deleted scenes, behind the scenes, commentary, interviews, and promo spots. It will keep you busy for hours.
Any X-Phile must pick up this set. Hell, I think any fan should own at least seasons 1-6, as they are terrific, all of them. But season 3 is a terrific investment, and some of the best hours of the best sci-fi series of all time.

I got into watching X-Files because a few people on my first ship were watching it. I watched it religously and when it came out on DVD, I was in HEVEAN.
